A city police officer was shot in the head with a projectile as his cruiser came under fire in an apparent pellet gun assault Monday night in the North End. It was the second such assault since last week, when a city firefighter was shot and injured while turning off a running hydrant in Old Hill.
"He wasn't injured," Springfield Police Capt. Larry Brown said of the police officer, who wasn't publicly identified and didn't require medical attention.
The incident happened just before 10 p.m. as the officer patrolled near Plainfield and Orchard streets in the Brightwood section of the North End.
A BB or pellet passed through an open window in the car and struck the officer in the head, police said. Officers called for backup, but they were unable to immediately locate an assailant.
While it remains unclear if the cruiser was deliberately targeted, investigators cordoned-off the area where the shooting happened as they hunted for a suspect. No arrests had been made as of early Tuesday, Brown said, adding that police don't have a physical description of the person responsible.
The incident happened a day before the one-year anniversary of the killing of Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose, who was shot to death while responding to a domestic call in the city's Sixteen Acres neighborhood on June 4, 2012.

How long before they get a real gun?
>> How long before they get a real gun?
What is that supposed to mean?
It was probably a dog getting payback.
Gotta watch out for those high capacity assault pellet guns! I’ve heard of some that can hold hundreds of BBs!
A stolen .22, 9mm, .40, etc.
I’d worry more about a single shot .22 cal. pellet rifle pushing 1200 fps, that’s enough to kill and reasonably quiet too.
Pellet gun is a real gun, so is a bb gun. read of someone dying of a bb to the chest just recently.
Yeah. I worded that wrong. Meant to refer to a .22, 9mm, etc.
:-)
I couldn’t resist. :)
i think i see the next desensitization target ing bought by cops.
dog with a gun pointing at them. to supplement all the white old people, pregnant women, and white kids looking like they are facing a mortal threat.
All good. It sounds to me like reading this story that someone has a gun that they are not mature or responsible enough to have.
Looks like a white area per Google maps.
You know, I really don’t give a crap about a cop shot anymore. When they stop protecting themselves and the state instead of the public maybe I’ll shed a tear.
An anti gun rights activist expanding the their boundaries? “Look, all guns are bad!”
