Armed raiders who targeted London's Selfridges store dressed in burqas fled with £1m worth of luxury watches, police said Saturday.
The six used religious dress to disguise themselves and their tools during the raid at 8.30pm on Thursday.
The axe and sledge hammer-wielding gang smashed glass cabinets at a pre-arranged moment then filled holdalls with the watches.
Stunned onlookers in Oxford Street, the capital's busiest shopping district, watched the gang meet accomplices outside in getaway vehicles believed to be a moped, two motorbikes and a black BMW estate.
Two suspects were arrested after falling off a moped when it crashed nearby. Members of the public stopped them from leaving.
On Saturday Scotland Yard said officers recovered one holdall at the scene containing 41 watches.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Noyes said: "This was a brazen attack that was clearly well planned and well thought through. Fortunately robberies like this are rare.
"I'd like to thank those members of the public who stepped in and detained our two suspects. Their quick thinking and brave actions have helped our investigation.
"We have recovered a number of items from the scene, as well as the gang's vehicles they used in their escape and we are carrying out a full forensic examination.
"Extra officers are in the Oxford Street area and our investigation is moving quickly with a number of lines of enquiry. We still want to hear from anyone who saw the robbery, who may have seen the vehicles involved in the time running up to or after the robbery or who think they may know who has been involved."
A 19-year-old man has been charged with offences relating to the robbery, police said.
A 24-year-old man was taken to a central London hospital, suffering from a fractured leg. He remains in hospital.

It is just those hilarious moozlums again redistributing the wealth and taking back what is rightfully theirs. Who are we to judge? Maybe the shopowner spit on a koran or something?
That's for religious reasons? I always thought it was to hide those butt ugly, monkey looking women who don't shave.
Assuming that their not Muslim women, this will also be a HATE CRIME against that faith.
These men may have figured that they’d only get a slap on the wrist for robbing a jewelry store of a million lbs., and given the British legal system where 5 years for murder is considered ‘inhumane’ if you’re a politically-protected species, they probably made a reasonable assumption.
But did they factor in the “hate crime” aspect, of DISRESPECTING the attire from a protected class - I think not, and they pay, BIG-TIME, for that transgression.
Do we know if the suspects were Muslims and were borrowing their wives garments? Hilarious, I love it.
I doubt these guys were mooselimbs but it does show up the danger of allowing this ridiculous form of dressing.
And make money doing it.
Love the beefy guy sitting on the criminal - looks like he has been training for something like this for a long time!
So, why aren’t the guys detaining the bad guy being charged with attempted grievious bodily harm? Can’t infringe on the bad guys just attempting to do their job now can we?

Sorry, but you are really pissing me off posting crap like this. Firstly, there is no British legal system. Secondly, if you think, and are trying to tell others, that 5 yrs for murder is a sentence in the UK, then you are as clueless about Britain as I think you are.
Either come to the UK and actually learn something about us or kindly STFU.

I’m sorry pal, but I AM SICK OF YOU GUYS complaining about our death penalty and then harboring our CRIMINALS because they face execution UNDER AMERICAN LAWS for a crime committed on AMERICAN SOIL, yet you guys (you guys being Europe, including GB) call our punishment inhumane and won’t send these animals back unless we promise not to seek the death penalty.
So what do we do? We agree to waive the death penalty, and default to life without parole. What do you guys do? You call that INHUMANE too.
