Looks as if they need to review their safety procedures and training. You never want to be in line with those wheels when the vehicle is moving anywhere near you.
99.9% of the time it won’t cause any problems if you break the rules. This guy’s accident was the 0.1% the safety procedures are designed to prevent. Sure, it feels stupid to follow them every single time. But...

I watched the race on TV yesterday, but changed channels immediately after. What a shame this happened.

Very unfortunate.
I know from working at the Indy Moto GP by the end of the third day everybody is sunburned, tired, and thinking about going home. Not necessarily in their most aware mental state.
