Strobridge Elementary School in Hayward, Calif., held a toy-gun exchange program over the weekend, according to a report from CBS-5 San Francisco. Inspired by gun buy-back programs that focus on getting weapons off the streets, Principal Charles Hill felt a similar program for toys made a lot of sense. "Playing with toys guns, saying 'I'm going to shoot you,' desensitizes them," said Hill, "so, as they get older, it's easier for them to use a real gun." Students who participated were given books in exchange for their toy guns. They were also enrolled in a raffle to win a bike, the event's grand prize. CBS-5 spoke with parents who had brought their children to trade in their guns. One mother said she was always against toy guns, but she noted that her son felt left out when he saw the other kids playing with theirs. Some of the guns shown in the CBS-5 report were clearly fake, but others that were exchanged might easily have passed for real weapons. Police Officer Braydon Wilson, who was at the toy-gun exchange to talk to students about safety, told CBS-5 that sometimes kids will paint their toy guns to look like real ones. Other times, owners of real guns will paint the tip of the gun barrel orange to make it appear like a toy, according to Wilson. The Daily Review spoke with Yih-Chau Chang, spokesperson for Responsible Citizens of California, a group that educates people about gun rights.

Why don’t they try a condom or drug buy-back?
It’s a sting. The kids come to the school with their toy guns and are arrested and suspended for a week.
The rest of the article (posted .. I didn't click the link) is nothing but asshole comments by asshole people, posing asshole "problems" with an asshole solution.
Criminalizing the thought of a gun.
Doesn’t this require them to bring the toy gun to school? What happened to the zero tolerance policy? Someone administrator should be fired for encouraging the bringing of toy guns to school.
They need to focus on kids playing with toy cars too. I know my son stages make believe accident scenes and car chases and stunts with his toy cars and trucks. What must he be learning about how dangerous and scary automobiles are?
On a related note, it seems like only yesterday when the “enlightened” progressive types ridiculed Christian fundamentalists for trying to ban Huck Finn from the schools because of some “naughty words” and apparent sexual innuendos. Almost overnight these same holier-than-thou intellectuals themselves started trashing the book when they discovered it contained the N word. Never mind the context in which it was used and the fact the Mark Twain was a staunch abolishionist.
Would they accept a Pop Tart chewed to resemble a gun? How about making a gun with a forefinger and thumb?
“Playing with toys guns, saying ‘I’m going to shoot you,’ desensitizes them,” said Hill, “so, as they get older, it’s easier for them to use a real gun.”
So playing with toy guns desensitizes them but playing video games where they shoot people does not. Kinda of a double standard there.
All 3 of my brothers played with toy guns, mostly cap guns. Played cowboy & Indians all the time. Neither one has shot anyone with a real gun.
When are they going to wise up and realize gun deaths are either due to disfunctional, sick, or evil people...not guns!
How can they possibly Hold a “toy-gun exchange”
When the word “Gun” has been outlawed in California for over a decade?!?
They'll have to announce it as a
“Toy hmm hmm hmmmm Exchange”
in the same way that Edith did to avoid saying “cling Peaches” to Archie....
Modern sex-ed is decidedly "sex positive". It encourages experimentation, promiscuity, disapproves of abstinence (it is counter to their worldview NOT to act on a sexual impulse). It also seeks to end ALL moral judgments over sexual pairings of any kind regardless of sex, age, relation, marital status, number, or species of partner(s).
Why stop there?
let’s have a hypodermic needle buy back.
Or a bong buyback.
Hey, I got one!
Let’s have an automobile buyback program or, or, or maybe we have a medical practitioner buyback program.
