Anger was mounting in Congress on Tuesday night as politicians, briefed for the first time after revelations about the government's surveillance dragnet, vowed to rein in a system that one said amounted to "spying on Americans".
Intelligence chiefs and FBI officials had hoped that the closed-door briefing with a full meeting of the House of Representatives would help reassure members about the widespread collection of US phone records revealed by the Guardian.
But senior figures from both parties emerged from the meeting alarmed at the extent of a surveillance program that many claimed never to have heard of until whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked a series of top-secret documents.

It was my distinct pleasure. My late wife worked with me for many years too.
It’s obviously a different NSA now, if you were working for them during the Cold War.
I hate having to keep on saying it, but “those were the good old days.” It was symmetrical. We knew the enemy and they us.
“want him extradited for unlawful use of a computer”
Meanwhile Fedzilla’s use of computers for cyber-spying on the personal records of millions of Americans without a warrant in violation of the 4th amendment is perfectly lawful, according to dear leader and the cabal.
I may be older now, and disabled, but if some obamaton tries to knock my cap off he’ll feel the wrath of my cane.
It’s the Agency’s mission to scoop up all comms and bring them back here and then separate the wheat from the chaff. Those who assume that we do collect comms between US persons, must also assume that operators are scribing your conversations. The enormity of that task would be mind-boggling. I’ve been retired since 1997, and even then the software for winnowing the take was very discriminating, and I can only imagine that it’s been tweaked so that only the wheat gets through. Personally, I sleep quite well (even though I’m currently hospitalized).
Unfortunately, I’m not able to go into much more detail.
lol, the leavin of the pharisees on full display. tomorrow will boehner call snowden a hero?
Thought so. It is the nature of the field.
Anyway, enjoy your retirement.

As you should. Thank you for your service.
The NSA has been given directives from the elected officials. The NSA is not the problem.
Thanks, pal. I’ll give it my best shot.
what’s this on Drudge about an allegation that IRS took 80 million medical records???
This is all so bizzare.
saw part of it and she had him on the ropes, it’s high time for all people to question their officials and stop them from passing insane laws which none of us want minus a few sheep
He was embarrassing, wasn’t he? I think he thought Greta would go soft on him and he was ill prepared for the grilling he got.
I enjoyed it.
loved it myself.
It’s why I think Greta should take the place of Hannity, she knows the law, is not a dummy and takes them all on .
er er er err and then tries to change the subject, hopefully someone who has more knowledge of computers can put a link up to the clip last night for anyone who has not seen it , as I;m sure they will enjoy seeing him squirm .
Most pols support this gross intrusion as it gives more power to the Beast known as fedgov.
Instead of acting convincingly, those nancy-boy and battle ax members of Congress shoehorned into offices by a few constituents behave even more dramatically in their lies. Remember the folks of university drama departments?
That poster is awesome.
I really HOPE that america CHANGE this development. Would never thought ten years ago that the US would run a system like PRISM in the future.
Hello NSA! God Bless America!
If the United States of America goes, so does the last vital remnant of the enlightenment.
