FEMA denies aid to Texas for West blast

WEST, TEXAS — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is refusing to provide money to help rebuild the small Texas town where a deadly fertilizer plant explosion leveled numerous homes and a school, and killed 15 people.

According to a letter obtained by The Associated Press, FEMA said it reviewed the state's appeal to help West but decided that the explosion "is not of the severity and magnitude that warrants a major disaster declaration."

The blast killed 10 first responders and brought national attention to the agricultural community. President Barack Obama traveled to the area to attend a memorial service for the first responders and others who died trying to help.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - As wildfires continue to wreak havoc across Texas, Gov. Rick Perry is criticizing the Obama administration for its denial late Tuesday of the state’s request for a federal Major Disaster Declaration to assist with the ongoing wildfire season, which has burned more than 2.2 million acres.

Find laws that were broken by the plant owners. Seize everything they own. Use that money to rebuild the town. If they kept too much product on hand which fueled the explosion, they fucked up. They should pay for it. If the owners end up on the street, oh well.

From the locked thread:

Geez, I’m shocked! I wonder how the people of West, Texas voted in this past prez election.

Probably very few. I'm sure Texas citizens will come to their aid. Every church in our area has had donations for West. I think Texas should stop sending taxes to DC and become a republic again.

“Screw ‘em, we don’t need them.”

Right on. Besides FEMA was not designed for natural
disaster relief anyway. It’s specifically for civil unrest
and reeducation.

Oh, there’s lots and lots of government money available.

But that money is only for “friends” of the administration.

Yes. Valerie Jarrett warned us. Maxine Waters warned us.

What will it take to get people to understand they are not dealing with their father’s democrat party anymore?

What were they supposed to do in Boston? Boston didn’t have thousands of people burned out of their homes.

I have no idea. I have not seen the size of it or the level of destruction. But, if it was a total loss, then there are the furnishings, equipment, books, furniture, etc.

When my son was in HS band, they bought a new marimba. That one instrument cost $10k. They had multiple. The concert tubas (they had 6) run $10k each. The marching ones were less.

Then add in all the other brass instruments (soft metal would not survive a fire), normally school-owned and stored. And that's just the band hall.

Stage equipment if they had a performance hall, books are freaking ridiculous at the prices schools pay ($100+ each), computer labs, a full library, and on and on.

I could easily see the building costing less than the contents.

Yep. Every resident and state agency in the whole state should just stop.

I was just looking at “a disaster” and the amount of people killed or injured. This explosion was in West was pretty big and did a lot of damage. Just wondering where they draw the line is all.

Un, why should FEMA pay for it at all?

Is the belief that FEMA is just a piggy-bank for any bad things that happen?
