Over the last two months, hundreds of protesters have walked out of North Carolinas capitol in handcuffs to show their opposition to policies by the GOP-controlled Legislature.
While a broader coalition of supporters is building around the Moral Mondays started by the state chapter of the NAACP, the inspiration behind the protests is a throwback to the biblical message of civil rights leaders fighting segregation in the Jim Crow era.
They argue that cutting benefit programs and cutting tax breaks for low- and middle-income families violates Jesus Christs teaching to care for those with the least. Its running into another school of Christian thought followed by many Southern conservatives: The best way to help the poor is through private charity, providing jobs and promoting self-reliance, rather than government programs.
The NAACP, and other groups that are joining them in larger numbers, oppose a range of Republican policies, from refusing to expand Medicaid to about 500,000 more people to restricting eligibility for the states pre-kindergarten program. Republicans, who control both chambers of the Legislature for the first time in more than a century, have also cut unemployment benefits and abolished the earned-income tax credit, which serves low to middle-income people.

Not so long ago, even communists believed that “he who does not work shall not eat.”
They used that as a justification for forced labor, and basically any atrocity they could think of. After all, as Article 12 of the 1936 USSR constitution (where the distortion of the Bible verse in question is) put it, work was a “duty” and a “matter of honor”.
NAACP is pretty much the Black KKK now. They only try to screw whitey....and enough White Guilt Liberals are there to appease them
One who is too lazy to work or who otherwise refuses to provide for his family “hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel” (1 Tim. 5:8)
but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame” (Prov. 10:4, 5)
The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made plain(Prov 15:19)
I'm surprise Jesus didn't tell that to Pilate.
surely Jesus would have wanted free pre-K for every chil’
and cell phones
Indeed, so Caesar could spy on them all.
Not forgetting: “Thou shalt not Steal”
They probably haven't opened a Bible since Vacation Bible School.
Jesus was most definitely NOT referring to governments. Jesus addressed individuals only. Jesus was a persuader. Welfare is coercion of some to steal their money in order to give it to others who may or may not be “poor” and in many cases are far richer than people from whom the resources are confiscated.
Jesus did not promulgate any sort of Robin Hood theology. People who interpret differently are not Christians. They are Socialists. The two are not compatible.
Many years ago, back in the 1960s or early ‘70s, I believe, there was a debate on TV between USSR lawyers and US lawyers.
I do remember the USSR Lawyer quoting that statement by St Paul (He who does not work shall not eat) in opposition to what the American politicians were doing about welfare.
I wonder if I post it again if it will be pulled.
Basically it showed a caricature of a black man resting while the white man labors to feed him.
At the same time it condemned the Congress for allowing it, praising the President for not wanting it, then a nice statement on which two politicians were for or against it.
Today the cartoon would be considered “reisist”.
The Bible calls for charity. Charity by force of arms is theft.
Republicans took over majority in NC General Assemby for the first time in over 100 years in 2014. These “protesters” here are mostly liberal Deomocrats who are pissed that they didn’t win. The local law enforcement, courts, etc. are being bled dry of funds due to this weekly display. It’s just a weekly demonstration to insist loudly that “Republicans are bad for minorities and women”.
