Al-Azhar Envoy to Pope Francis: Declaring Islam ‘Peaceful’ a Contingency for Restoring Interfaith Ties

JNS.org - An envoy from Egypt’s Al-Azhar University, one of the highest centers of learning in the Islamic world, has called on Pope Francis to declare Islam as a “peaceful religion” in order to restore ties between the world’s two largest faiths.

“The problems that we had were not with the Vatican but with the former pope. Now the doors of Al-Azhar are open,” Mahmoud Abdel Gawad, diplomatic envoy to the grand imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayyeb, told the Cairo-based Italian daily Il Messaggero in a report cited by AFP.

“Francis is a new pope. We are expecting a step forward from him. If in one of his addresses he were to declare that Islam is a peaceful religion, that Muslims are not looking for war or violence, that would be progress in itself,” he said.

But Gawad ruled out any dialogue that would include Jewish leaders, saying during the interview that Al-Azhar “will not take part in any meeting with Israelis.”

Under Pope Benedict, the Catholic Church had strained relations with the Muslim world over comments Benedict made about the Prophet Mohammed in 2006. Additionally, both Benedict and Francis have been critical of Muslim treatment of Christian minorities in the Middle East.

Why on earth would the Church desire “Interfaith Ties” with Islam? Do Michael and Gabriel hold regular conferences with Lucifer to work out how they can share religious space>

“Muslims have been at war with us infidels for 1400 years.”

GENESIS 21:11-12
11 And the angel also said, “You are now pregnant and will give birth to a son. You are to name him Ishmael (which means ‘God hears’), for the Lord has heard your cry of distress.

12 This son of yours will be a wild man, as untamed as a wild donkey! He will raise his fist against everyone, and everyone will be against him. Yes, he will live in open hostility against all his relatives.”

Regensburg: The lecture ... touches on the most poignant current problems the world witnesses, namely, the rise of terrorism and the confrontation between reason and will, between the Word and the Sword.

The lecture includes this quote from Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus (an educated Persian on the subject of Christianity and Islam, and the truth of both) ...

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

The World to the Islamic Envoy to Pope Francis: Declaring Islam ‘Peaceful’ won't make it so

The theme, concept and violence advocated in the name of jihad is anything BUT peaceful ...

The emperor goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul.

God is not pleased by blood, and not acting reasonably is contrary to God's nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death....

The decisive statement in this argument against violent conversion is this: not to act in accordance with reason is contrary to God's nature. The editor, Theodore Khoury, observes: "For the emperor, as a Byzantine shaped by Greek philosophy, this statement is self-evident. But for Muslim teaching, God is absolutely transcendent. His will is not bound up with any of our categories, even that of rationality." Here Khoury quotes a work of the noted French Islamist R. Arnaldez, who points out that Ibn Hazn went so far as to state that God is not bound even by his own word, and that nothing would oblige him to reveal the truth to us. Were it God's will, we would even have to practice idolatry.

In other words, just like Satan did in the garden of Eden, Islam proclaims that God does not mean what He says.

Also, who designates anyone to speak for Islam; it’s not as though there is an Islamic “pope” or any other form of ultimate authority.

Declaring Islam a peaceful religion would be a lie.Its something that this Pope should Not do.

The believers in that faith have to prove its peaceful. Not the Catholic Church.

seems to me Islam is to Peace what orgasm is to rape.If someone is choked to the point of fearing for their life unless they recite Islamic verse-such submission may bring a temporary peace. But when the bad guy comes back and does it again—and again and is given the same response— can’t call that a just peace. Any more than I could call an orgasm during a rape/sodomy good sex.

good reply I can only add the spawn of Ishmael have been at war with “every man” since then. If they do not have any non Muslim to fight they fight each other just because that is the way of the beast.

Yeah. I found it interesting they’re still so openly offended. When I think about it I remember Pope Benedict’s commentary, accurate. I’m sure we had threads. But not that big a deal.
