ST. LOUIS Police Major Joseph Spiess was among department brass who hit the streets after a particularly violent night this week, to help look for trouble.
He found some, and it almost killed him.
Spiess was among about a dozen top commanders helping supplement patrols Tuesday night after 19 people were wounded in eight incidents the night before.
By the time the shift ended, there would be two close calls for officers and one embarrassing mistake.
Spiess, 52, was alone, in uniform, driving an unmarked Chevrolet Impala about 9:22 p.m. when he spotted a suspicious-looking black Pontiac Bonneville with temporary license tags on Evans Avenue, heading west near Vandeventer Avenue.
He said he made a U-turn to follow, and the Pontiacs driver would not stop for his lights and siren. The circumstances did not qualify under rules limiting pursuits, so he gave up at Evans and Sarah Street.
As Spiess continued along Evans, a man jogged slowly toward him and stopped between parked cars about 12 feet away.
He looks me dead in the eye, lifts his pistol and starts shooting at me, Spiess said Wednesday. The first round sounded like a shotgun went off in my car. Then I heard a high-pitched whine go through the (open) drivers side window and out the passenger window.
He looked at me square in the face, Im in an Impala, wearing a police shirt, and he was looking me right in the eye. He knew who he was shooting at. He absolutely knew I was a policeman.

Just a street organizer, nothing to see here, just move along.
for context, one has to know if he’s a good cop, or a thug with a badge.
What the heck is going on in St. Louis? Another Democrat convention or something?
Something needs to be done about these insane Amish.
he's profiling....he's profiling racist!!!/s

"About the same time, a white Volkswagen, which fit the description from a robbery, fled from an attempted stop by a SWAT team sergeant at Natural Bridge and North Florissant avenues. Again, the officer did not pursue."
...
Police learned the vehicle was stolen, and contained a pistol and stolen possessions from a series of car break-ins, officials said.
About 4:10 a.m. Wednesday, the driver of the vehicle walked out of St. Louis University Hospital. Police have been searching for the man, 27, ever since, said Lt. Col. Lawrence OToole.
He said officers had put a hold on the man with the hospital but not a guard because they believed he was too badly hurt to flee.
Why do the people of St. Louis demand such bad police policy? Oh, that's right. They're Liberals.
It is getting ugly. Between east saint Louis and downt saint Louis it is a combat zone..
Youts.
Places I’ll never visit:
Detroit,
St. Louis,
Chicago,
NYC,
Inner Saint Louis is a crumbling cess pool. I hate the place.
Eons ago I was taking a cab form the STL airport to Scott AFB. The cab driver asked if I was going to do any sightseeing - then warned me to stay of out STL and that “east STL would get me killed”.
This was in the late 70s - glad to see things have gotten better...
“Police Major Joseph Spiess department brass”
These guys parked their car, got out of their car with their guns and set up positions of ambush as I came slowly down the street, he said.
Most police cars have realtime GPS tracking.
A hit? Gang initiation? Does Major Joe know something he
shouldn’t? Or just a typical night in St.Louis?
What do Chicago and St.Louis(as well as lots of others)have in common?DemonRat Strongholds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still no mention of race but a picture of Davonta Coleman removes all doubt:
Custom "airbrushing" and missing hubcaps complements of East St. Louis.
Funny you mention Scott AFB, though... I dated a lovely young woman that attended McKendree College in Lebanon... drove out to take her to her homecoming dance on the Air Base. Along time ago.
My niece went to college in Chicago and is now in Cambodia working with refuges. A friend’s daughter went to college in St. Louis and is going over to a Cambodian refuge camp in a few days. Praying for them more now as they are (or going) over there - but It sounds like they are/will be in safer surroundings.
Ya.
The gangs in Las Vegas were so bad, several high schools held their proms on Nellis AFB - until someone got shot. No more dances on base.
We fled Vegas in 1991, the gangs had all but taken over the schools. I leave out the ethnicity of said gangs. AS you drive north up I-15 from the center of Las Vegas, you will pass a massive wall next to the freeway - is it to reduce noise - or keep the residents of the Cary St “projects” from using cars on the freeway for target practice?
So, it isn’t ‘just’ East STL - they are a lot of places that look just like a third world reproduction on US soil.
GOD Bless them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
