WASHINGTON: For the first time, America's racial and ethnic minorities make up about half of the under-5 age group, the US government said on Thursday. It's a historic shift that shows how young people are at the forefront of sweeping changes by race and class.
The new census estimates, a snapshot of the US population as of July 2012, come a year after the Census Bureau reported that whites had fallen to a minority among babies. Fueled by immigration and high rates of birth, particularly among Hispanics, racial and ethnic minorities are now growing more rapidly in numbers than whites.
Based on current rates of growth, whites in the under-5 group are expected to tip to a minority this year or next, said Thomas Mesenbourg, the Census Bureau's acting director.
The government also projects that in five years, minorities will make up more than half of children under 18. Not long after that, the total US white population will begin a decline in absolute numbers, due to aging baby boomers.
The nation's demographic changes are already stirring discussion as to whether some civil rights-era programs, such as affirmative action in college admissions, should be retooled to focus more on income rather than race and ethnicity. The Supreme Court will rule on the issue this month.
The gap between rich and poor in the US has now stretched to its widest since 1970, making opportunities to reach the middle class increasingly difficult.
Longer-term changes in family structure, such as a decline in marriage, have led to a rise in single-mother households across all racial groups, with the fastest growth now occurring among whites. More than 40 percent of newborns are now born out of wedlock, in families more likely to be low income.
The latest census numbers show:
* The population younger than 5 stood at 49.9 percent minority in 2012.
* For the first time in more than a century, the number of deaths now exceeds births among white Americans. This "natural decrease'' occurred several years before the government's original projection. For now, the white population is still increasing slightly, due to immigration from Europe.
* As a whole, the nonwhite population increased by 1.9 percent to 116 million, or 37 percent of the US The fastest percentage growth is among multiracial Americans, followed by Asians and Hispanics. Non-Hispanic whites make up 63 percent of the US; Hispanics, 17 percent; blacks, 12.3 percent; Asians, 5 percent; and multiracial Americans, 2.4 percent.
* Among the under-5 age group, 22 percent live in poverty. Black toddlers were most likely to be poor, at 41 percent, followed by Hispanics at 32 percent and whites at 13 percent. Asian toddlers had a poverty rate of 11 percent.
"More so than ever, we need to recognize the importance of young minorities for the growth and vitality of our labor force and economy," said William H Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who analyzed the census data.
The gaps in achievement tend to emerge early in childhood, and disparities are especially evident in SAT admission scores. College Board data show that average scores spread as wide as 130-140 points in each of the reading, math and writing sections for a student with family income of less than $20,000, compared with a student with family income exceeding $200,000.
About 40 percent of whites age 25-29 graduate from college, compared with 15 percent for Latinos and 23 percent for blacks.

For some reason that I am pretty sure of, liberals really HATE white culture, and eliminating its influence is a utopian goal of theirs.
So, the challenge to them would be - provide an example of a non-white society that you’d prefer over America as a desirable place to live.
How many unmarried young men do you know? That is the key to these demographic trends.

The real question is whether Latinos can run the US better than the countries they came from (Mexico, etc.).
When asked if I am MINORITY I will answer “Yes! Now give me my free stuff!.”

The ritualisation of premarital sex, making it a rite of passage for most Americans (and others) at a very young age has damaged marriage more than anything else, even homosexuality.
Societies that value intact families will undoubtedly dominate, over time. If there is one common social trait among successful societies world-over, it is the institution of marriage. It’s not for no reason that civilisation flourishes on the bedrock of a stable home.
Sadly, I know a number of such young men among friends of the family. They simply don’t see marriage as a major life goal. Some of them have been in long term relationships, but have not married. I don’t know all details; it could be that the girls involved didn’t want marriage.
Face it, cultural norms, if that’s the right word, have changed. Many young people don’t see value in marriage, or see it as a life goal. Yet these same young people, especially guys, are happy to live with a girl or have a series of girlfriends in which they are getting all the benefits of marriage without any of the responsibilities.
It pains me to see many quality young people who don’t want children or marriage or family. The future of our entire civilization depends upon marriage and family. Our culture as we know it will not survive as the “baby mama” culture of the ghetto spreads to the rest of society.
Shhh! If they find out about your wonderful county, they’ll decide it needs diversity. Then you’ll get some terrific Section 8 housing along with exciting, vibrant new residents, gang members, refugees, etc.
So when “Whites” are 5% of the population, will they still be blamed for all the problems of the world and will the government still be discriminating against them for slavery, jim crow, and the cop in the OJ trial saying the “N word?”

My son is 30 and unmarried. He has had his wild times, and is employed in a stable job, and has his own home. He’d like to find a good woman and get married. Why hasn’t he?
Modern women, in general, are shrews. Our culture teaches them that they are superior, they are princesses, and they should never, ever have to compromise. Who in their right mind would voluntarily marry such a person? It would be far quicker to find a woman you don’t like and give her half of your stuff.
Hispanic is now a race? I know plenty of white looking people with Spanish last names.

In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think.
Thirdly, the bill will not permit the entry of subversive persons, criminals, illiterates, or those with contagious disease or serious mental illness.
As I noted a moment ago, no immigrant visa will be issued to a person who is likely to become a public charge … the charges I have mentioned are highly emotional, irrational, and with little foundation in fact. They are out of line with the obligations of responsible citizenship. They breed hate of our heritage."
