It’s simple. Execute car thieves as they used to do with horse thieves.

Frankly, I agree. Cars are todays horses. And they are freaking expensive to buy and maintain, like decent horses.

Police solve crimes?

Who knew!

I thought they just raised revenue for the Welfare State.

That’s my experience over about a dozen interactions in my life.

Doesn't work if they're not out to steal the car. The story just indicates the thieves are obtaining access to the vehicle, and stealing items inside, by disabling the alarm and unlocking the doors. It doesn't mention they're taking the cars.

Around here they are breaking in and taking the registration and loose items.
No sign of entry. No alarms go off. For some reason they want the registration.

Identification fraud

By getting your registration, it gives the thieves the opportunity to take out credit cards and commit other acts of fraud.

Peoria Arizona police sent out a bulletin that thieves were targeting churches. The idea is to locate people who will be out of the house for a known period of time. The thieves break into the cars to steal registration and the garage door opener. They then proceed to the house to plunder the goodies.

A friend sent me the notice. His church is next door to ours, but in Phoenix, not Peoria. He said that their church had had multiple break-ins during funeral services and early morning Mass.

There are no revenue possibilities for the po-po to investigate and pursue property crimes, therefore they don't.

Now, traffic violations like seat belts, child safety seats, DWI, etc. - that's another story.

Plus those things provide the opportunity to incarcerate somebody.

No romance or adrenalin rush in property crimes.

The most cunning way to steal a car happened to my friend’s brand new Corvette about 25 years ago. Seems he got tickets to a Brown’s game from an “anonymous grateful patient”. While he attended the game they broke into his garage and flat bedded his car away.

Buy a car with a standard transmission.

Won’t stop a professional, but most people under 30 won’t be able to drive it.

This is so true in the city but not out in the farmland where kids learn to drive everything that has wheels by the time they are ten or so.

Interesting story in Houston paper not long ago about guy who tried to steal two different cars but couldn’t drive either because he “couldn’t figure out what that extra pedal was for and there was no D (for drive) on the panel”. Seems that he thought it was some kind of brake, pushed it in, stepped on the gas and lurched into the car parked in front of the one he was trying to steal.

Hard to find a car with a standard transmission any more. Great to drive in the snow and ice but horrible if you have to stop in the middle of a hill.
