WASHINGTON It seems the 2016 presidential race is well under way as buzzed-about White House hopefuls hit convention stages, late-night TV shows and Twitter. All early indications show Hillary Clinton as the Democrat to beat, despite her Benghazi problem. But one Republican is becoming an early favorite by tossing out his partys old, dusty playbook and playing by his own New Jersey rules.
While other Republicans such as U.S. Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Marco Rubio of Florida gave predictable conservative stump speeches at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington last week, Gov. Chris Christie was hanging out with Bill Clinton and slow-jamming the news with Jimmy Fallon. He may irk some conservative core members of his own party by giving President Obama props for his response to Superstorm Sandy and appearing at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in Chicago, but its the Democrats who really have something to pout about.
So says a Quinnipiac University poll taking the temperature in the swing state of Colorado, which gives Christie a 3-point edge over Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical matchup. The margin of error makes that potential matchup a dead heat, as is a potential race between Clinton and Rubio.
.But as the GOP continues to struggle to find its groove after last years presidential loss, Christie is defining himself as the anti-Mitt Romney: a guy just like you and me, weight struggles, short temper and all. He also has an actual track record of being the kind of bipartisan Republican former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown claimed to be during his recent campaigns, but really wasnt. Christies gravitas has earned him a hefty double-digit lead over his Democratic challenger in the upcoming governors race in the traditionally blue state.
And while Massachusetts wont factor on the Electoral College tally on Election Night 2016, the Bay State can give a boost to Christie in other ways. A March fundraiser in Boston for Christies re-election campaign drew the states biggest, most deep-pocketed Republican names and helped tighten the bond between Christie and Brown. We certainly can expect to see these two together again if and when Brown makes a bid for the State House and if Christie makes his move for the White House, though certainly Brown needs Christie more than Christie needs him.
Some GOP pundits brush off the notion that Christie is their man, telling me that he is peaking too early and shooting himself in the foot with his photo ops with Clinton and Obama. But perhaps Christie is only starting to get into the swing of things, crafting a persona that will play well in the swing state margins where the next presidential election will be won and lost.
Not a chance.
What the he!! is this woman smoking?
That’s only because you can’t see anybody else behind him, ha!
I don’t know about anyone else out there, but as a former Republican and constant Conservative, I think we all should just go Medieval on their a$$es and go scorched earth.
If the ‘candidate’ (dog catcher to President) isn’t a true conservative, then effem. I honestly don’t think we can work within the current (traditional) political parameters any more.
Misprint...He’s ahead in eating “PEZ’s”, Not “prez”.
Oh, absolutely there’s a chance. The GOP front-loads the Primaries in the NE, and insists on keeping them “open” so that plenty of ‘rats come in and vote, thus seeing to it that the least palatable candidate wins.
Unless some astounding thing happens, the nominee for 2016 will be either Fat Boy, or the increasingly worthless Jeb.
He can’t beat a democrat and,if by a freak occurance he DOES you won’t notice the difference!
I will die before I vote for the New Jersey RINO...no thank you.
Headline “Chris Christie out front in 2016 prez race” reminded me of the scene in Shawshank Redemption:
“Hey, Fat A*#. Fat A*#! Talk to me boy! I know youre there I can hear you breathin. Dont you listen to these nitwits you hear me? This place aint so bad. Tell you what, Ill introduce you around, make you feel right at home. I know a couple of big old bull queers thatd just love to make youre acquaintance. Especially that big, white, mushy butt of yours.”
“God! I dont belong here! I want to go home!”
“We have a winner!”
“And its Fat A*# by a nose!”
“Atkins: Chris Christie out front in 2016 prez race”
Are they talking about his stomach again?
I guess it’s never too early for the mainstream media to come out and start their promotion of “moderate” candidate(s) for the Republican presidential nomination. Don’t believe their propaganda—they want yet another “moderate” to be nominated so that the Democrat candidate can win in another cake walk.
I wonder if he can beat Hillary in the primary.
If the candidate (dog catcher to President) isnt a true conservative, then effem. I honestly dont think we can work within the current (traditional) political parameters any more.
I agree. The GOPe and RINOs have shown they are not to be trusted. I'd sooner empower a 'rat than a RINO Judas.
He will always be out front. A different Atkins would help.
Is that because of his extended waistline?
That’s his pot belly out in front. He appears to be best buddies with Obummer and is anti-2nd amendment. That man will never get a dime or a vote from me for the 2016 election cycle.
Yeah, let’s run Mr. Creosote; the GOP seems to be in the business of making democrat wetdreams come true.
