As Congress debates an overhaul to the federal immigration system, New Jersey lawmakers again took up controversial legislation today that would allow students living in the country illegally to pay in-state tuition at the state’s public colleges.

The bill, dubbed the “Tuition Equality Act,” was approved by the state Assembly Budget Committee after a lengthy hearing in Trenton. The crowd in the chamber, which included immigrant students who have been pushing for the change for years, cheered as the committee moved the bill.

Makes sense to me. Charge illegals in state tuition, but charge legal American citizens out-of-state tuition. /sarc

Democrats are despicable, corrupt parasites.

Our elected representatives think they are in office to represent everyone except legal citizens.

I thought there were some decent GOP lawmakers in NJ who created a bill based on the employment provisions of the Arizona law. Of course it would not have passed the Dem controlled statehouse.

Christie and Mayor Booker did nothing when the illegals cut the heads off 3 black college students.

Why have instate tuition at all then ? Can I just come to N.Y. state and say I’m an illegal ? WTF would I want to pay out of state tuition when I can “Obama” or as it used to be called “Lie” and get a discount.

And on top of needing to prove they are legal, they are penalized by having to pay out of state tuition because they are Americans! California already does this and it makes so angry I could scream that we treat our own worse than invaders!

It used to be that governments did only what was in their interests. No more. That philosophy has been replaced by the liberal democrat fantasy that America can do everything for everybody. Soon we may realize that the reality is we can do almost nothing for anybody anymore including ourselves. Just keep printing those Obama-dollars.

What about the AMERICAN KIDS who are in this country legally?

The kids who will end up being the only ones paying for college will be white middle class American-born, B-C students.

“Democrats are despicable, corrupt parasites.”

No. They are subversives who entice foreigners to illegal acts.

They should be imprisoned.

Speaking as someone raised in Hunterdon County (which is still (R) by the way)... I can call NJ a “2 holer outhouse”... one from Trenton to Camden... and one hole (A big hole) from Somerville eastward.

Everything about this state bill is constitutional imo. The Founding States made the 10th Amendment to clarify that the Constitution’s silence about issues like immigration and public schools means that such issues are uniquely state power issues.

So if NJ taxpayers don’t like the idea of in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, but sit on their hands and let state lawmakers pass this bill anyway, then that’s the problem of NJ taxpayers.
