Dog-provoked bear attack in NW Wisconsin

SHELL LAKE, Wis. (KMSP) -

A man is recovering at a Twin Cities hospital after he was attacked by a black bear Monday night near Shell Lake in northwestern Wisconsin.

According to the Wisconsin DNR, the bear attack was provoked by the man's dog.

The victim's brother, who was inside the family's cabin, stepped out and shot the bear. The bear was injured, but ran away.

The victim was taken to the hospital in Shell Lake before he was airlifted to the Twin Cities, where he is in stable condition.

This is the second dog-related bear mauling reported this month in the Northland. On June 3, a McGregor, Minn. woman was attacked by a black bear when her golden retriever chased after three yearlings. The mother bear initially went after the dog before turning its attention to the woman.

"It's not altogether uncommon for dogs to set us up by harassing a bear and then leaving the scene and the bears then come after the human, which is way easier to catch," Peggy Callahan, with the Wildlife Science Center, told FOX 9 News.

The attack occured at the man's cabin. It seems to me that the dog was doing the proper thing, defending its territory. Bears are here on our suffrance, not we on theirs. We did not strive to be at the top of the food chain without good purpose.

My s-i-l has a house in rural Montana where she spends the summer alone with her dog. The dog always alerts her to the presence of a bear. I am going to tell her about this.

Yeah...we are so Godlike. So, did they go after the bear to put it out of it's misery?

Bad reporting of a story.

I infer the bear came up to the cabin, the dog alerted on the bear, the man came out, got mauled, his relative came out, shot the bear and the bear ran off.

I do not see where the dog did anything wrong in that case. maybe the owner should have been packing a pistol when he went outside.

In the second case GR’s should not be trying to fetch bear cubs.

You can chase after a wounded bear, FRiend, not me. A wounded black bear could make short work of you.

Said it once, I’ll say it again – Why aren’t these cases where Guns saves Lives a reason for a rollback of all the present infringements on our civil right of self-defense?

Why is it that the gun grabbers have a one way street on this deal with their Anaconda like grip on our god-given rights?

Each time there is a shooting by some lunatic leftist, we innocent folks end up losing more of our freedom.

Well, I say it’s time we push back on that and get in their faces using these cases of guns preserving life as a reason for the gun grabbers to stick their liberty destroying agenda where the sun don’t shine.
[Please excuse my overly graphic invective]

A bit of a heart in the throat moment as a very good friend of mine retired and moved to Shell Lake. I had to call him to make sure he was fine.

I had a Golden Retriever for 15 years and being a rural man and rancher took him frequently into the fields and woods.

I can recall over a 1/2 dozen distinct times he did just what this GR did....wander ahead, start a fight with something and then come running back to hide behind me. Several bulls, a Rottweiler, 2 Dobermans, a rutting buck, and at least two very pissed off neighbors come to mind.

We should pick our dogs like we pick our friends.

I now have Alsatians and Huskies who are true companions that would stand and die with me.....having learned, I leave the clown breeds for others.

It could be a conspiracy between the dog and the bear, that is, “Hey, mon, if you maul my owner, then we both gets a cabin full of grub!” “Sounds like a plan, dawg!”
