Dog-provoked bear attack in NW Wisconsin

SHELL LAKE, Wis. (KMSP) -

A man is recovering at a Twin Cities hospital after he was attacked by a black bear Monday night near Shell Lake in northwestern Wisconsin.

According to the Wisconsin DNR, the bear attack was provoked by the man's dog.

The victim's brother, who was inside the family's cabin, stepped out and shot the bear. The bear was injured, but ran away.

The victim was taken to the hospital in Shell Lake before he was airlifted to the Twin Cities, where he is in stable condition.

This is the second dog-related bear mauling reported this month in the Northland. On June 3, a McGregor, Minn. woman was attacked by a black bear when her golden retriever chased after three yearlings. The mother bear initially went after the dog before turning its attention to the woman.

"It's not altogether uncommon for dogs to set us up by harassing a bear and then leaving the scene and the bears then come after the human, which is way easier to catch," Peggy Callahan, with the Wildlife Science Center, told FOX 9 News.

He’s actually just about my height and weight but he still thinks he’s the tiny little puppy who slept curled up in my lap.

He still tries to but all that fits on my lap now is his big giant head...:D

To post pictures do this -but- replace the [ and ] with a < and >.

Can’t post it exactly as it would be as the HTML would automatically try to read it as an image.

And the new little "Bubbette", Seven.

She's already fiercely defending the yard against marauding hordes of bunnies and fireflies..:)

No real hunter/predator would leave a wounded animal to die a slow and painfull death from a less than killing shot!
Just this last winter I had to shoot a black bear that had been raiding my livestock, my dogs treed it at about 03:15 am, I tracked the dogs through the snow to the bear at about 03:45.
I took the shot, and the bear fell out of the tree; I thought he was dead until he sat up and looked straight at me, I went to take another shot and my rifle jammed, at that point I thought, time to go to the bayonet and this will be one hell of a fight.
The bear decided to take off instead of fighting it out right there on his own ground. I tracked the bear for about 2 miles; you know; a blood drop here, a scuff in the snow there, no really clear tracks but between the blood and crushed snow enough sign to help us meet again in the bottoms of Bean Gulch Creek. I put a shot through his brain box and ended it.
Didn’t want to shoot brother bear but couldn’t afford his depredations either.
With a winch and a chain saw turned him into dog food (don’t eat bear meat), but wont waste the life of another being.
A true hunter/killer does not allow a wounded animal/human to suffer and die slowly from wounds, but tracks them down and finishes the job.

Dogs as protection against bears can either be a good thing or a disaster; it really depends on the dog.

I worked two summers in remote Yukon Territory, Canada and a geologist friend had a great bear dog...went everywhere with her...helicopters, fixed wing air, fly camps etc. She would often be dropped off by copter and spend the day or two depending on the weather with dog Shadow. Shadow was some kind of multi-cross bred, German shepherd-Lab-? Shadow was known far and wide a being very tough on grizzlies, and black bears and ran off more than one aggressive bear.

I used to worry that one day she and Shadow would come against one that wasn’t afraid...but so far, hasn’t happened.
