Calves come from cows. Veal is from sheep or lamb.

Its called the Commerce clause and it applies here. Amazing all the PETA folks on FR while reading this thread. No wonder the country is doomed.

I know what the Commerce Clause is. Congress has the power to force California to sell these eggs from tortured chickens. But in the absence of Steve King using the regulatory powers of the federal government to do that, California is free to determine what kinds of eggs it will allow to be sold in California.

If California didn’t have that right, then King would not need to propose this legislation.

Until Congress acts to limit California’s right to control egg quality, they are free to keep these tortured chicken eggs out of their state.

“Tortured chickens”

Admit it, you are a PETA stooge.

Admit it, you are a PETA stooge.

Is that the best you can do?

In typical liberal fashion you lose the argument so you engage in ad hominem attacks.

Admit it, you lost the argument.

yeah people ate those wild chickens for thousands of years and managed to get by just fine.

No, a factory farm is the way. Lets engineer turkeys while we’re at it. Make the breast meat so large they can’t mate naturally. Make the chickens grow so fast they can’t stand up. torture young cows so the meat is tender.

oh yeah we already do

The first cases of West Nile showed up in 1997 so this particular problem is particularly recent. On the other hand bird borne diseases include iNFLUENZA which has killed 100s of millions.

if you're a bird, that includes BILLIONS of chickens for just flu.

Read up on it.

“Veal is from sheep or lamb.”

Sorry pal, but you are wrong. This from Wikipedia since you didn’t believe me.

Veal is the meat of young cattle, as opposed to beef from older cattle. Though veal can be produced from a calf of either sex and any breed, most veal comes from male calves of dairy cattle breeds. Wikipedia

Nothing personal but P&G killed Bryers.

P&G doesn't own Bryers. Their owner is Unilever. You know one of those fine upstanding non money grubbing European companies.

And you are right, anything that Unilever buys quickly goes down hill.

If California wants eggs from chickens raised in comfort, then they can find a producer who does such a thing - not force producer in other states to bend to their will.

BTW, the Chickens remain SLAVES to the consumer anyway, no matter how much comfort they are provided. The consumer steals their little chicks - actually eats the embryo. Has PETA addressed that issue? /s

Are you speaking of Breyer's Dairy Products? If so, they were acquired by Unilever, not by P&G.

In which case, I can understand your assessment.

If California wants eggs from chickens raised in comfort, then they can find a producer who does such a thing - not force producer in other states to bend to their will.

California has specfic emissions requirements for cars sold in California. If Detroit or Japan or France wants to sell their cars in California, then those cars must meet the California emissions standards, or they can't be sold here.

The same goes for our eggs. California requires all eggs sold in this state to meet the same animal husbandry standards that California farmers have to meet and if people in Iowa want to raise their chickens in tiny little cages and under inhumane conditions, then they can't sell their eggs here.

California has a right to determine the emission standards for all cars sold here and the cage conditions of chickens whose eggs are sold here. This is basic States Rights stuff and pending a federal law (Like Steve King wants to introduce) which would require California to lax those standards, California has every right to keep the eggs of inhumanely caged chickens out of our state.

I can't believe all the Freepers that are arguing for Federal Intervention in an exercise of the 10th Amendment by the people of California (who passed this law by a 60%+ margin BTW.)

BTW, the Chickens remain SLAVES to the consumer anyway, no matter how much comfort they are provided. The consumer steals their little chicks - actually eats the embryo.

The Bible says in Proverbs 12:10 that the person who is using the labor or life of the beast has an obligation to treat the beast's life with respect.

Has PETA addressed that issue?

The California law was passed by over 60% of the voters in this state. PETA's opinion on this issue is irrelevant. This is what the PEOPLE of the State of California asked for. What right do the people of Iowa have to tell California how to run it's business.

Steve King and most of the Freepers on this thread are asking for an expansion of the Commerce Clause. I think we need to re-think our knee jerk reactions to every single issue that we tend to disagree on.

In this case I think it is fair to say to Steve King... go suck eggs!

CA’s not. Merely regulating commerce within its state.

King is off base here.

How is CA regulating the egg market within its borders a violation of the interstate commerce clause?

CA’s law is not an interstate trade barrier. It is simply regulating a market within its borders.
