A spectacular 16.5-acre estate originally part of George Washington's famed Mount Vernon is up for sale for a presidential $25 million, despite needing renovations. Steeped in American history, the waterfront property, located in Alexandria, Virginia, is on the market for the first time in half a century. Named River View Estate after its 383 feet of uninterrupted vistas of the Potomac River, the residence makes plain why Washington once proclaimed: 'I had rather be on my farm than emperor of the world.' The estate boasts a 6,000-square foot manor home, 2,000-square foot guest house, four-car garage, carriage house and staff quarters that are, according to the listing 'poised for modern renovations.'

Beautiful pic of Mount Vernon! My husband and I have visited it several times. We were there twice this past November around Thanksgiving. Visited the excellent new Visitors Center (new to us since we were at Mt. Vernon years ago), and went on one of their wonderful after-dark Christmas candlelight tours, which I’d highly recommend.

Funny you mentioned the Christmas tours: back in 2001, I rousted the family out early Christmas morning (my daughter was in Alexandria at the time and we were visiting) and we were all at Mt Vernon at 9:15 AM (the family puts up with me when it comes to the General). It is the only day they allow visitors on the third floor and cupola.

There was only one other family there, a group from Georgia. Great day. It was the 225th anniversary of the Battle of Trenton, and if I could not be there, then this was the place to be.

Hopefully, someone or someone(s) like Rush will buy it, renovate it and turn it into the peoples' museum.

Americans no longer have the peoples' house, so lets get a peoples' museum that schoolkids and history buffs can see Mt. Vernon up close?

I'm imagining what you saw through my eyes...what a wonderful, wonderful sight, on such historic grounds, in the home of someone so admirable. It was just you and the other couple from Georgia that day. How quiet and still it must have been on that Christmas morning. If only you could have suspended yourself in time and transported yourself into the moment, on the 22nd anniversary of the Battle of Trenton, but being there on that day was definitely the next best thing. How I do so envy you that day. It's a little too late for me to see Mt. Vernon before I die, but I can imagine what the visit would be like..such a good feeling!
