NJ bans trash-talking among HS athletes — will it work?

It’s no secret, Governor Chris Christie has done his fair share of trash talking over the years, and now in his own state of New Jersey, a new ban targeting high school students who talk trash at sporting events will be soon going into effect.

The office of the Attorney General of New Jersey along with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) plan to enforce new rules that will make it clear that harassing conduct related to race, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or religion will not be tolerated.

The “trash talk” ban will affect nearly 500 high schools, 250,000 student athletes and tens of thousands of coaches come this Fall.

Question is: is this ban really going to stop the trash talking that has become a pastime for most athletes.

“When dealing with athletes on a professional level, yeah I think a ban would work,” Fort Lee High School senior Samuel Yeom told PIX 11 News. “But on a high school level, it shouldn’t be done. It will be hard to regulate because we don’t have refs with super hearing.”

Meanwhile, Edgewater resident Joe Kim thinks the ban will do more damage than good when it goes into effect.

It is always amusing to see government entities regulating speech. Soon any criticism of liberals will be considered hate speech and subject to prosecution.

My understanding is that this regulation was aimed primarily at addressing incidents involving athletes and spectators, but this is pathetic.

Compare that idiocy to vintage bit of NHL trash-talking from the Stanley Cup Finals back in the early 1990s [CAUTION: Replete with very adult language]:

Get off the ******** ice, ya f@&&ot!

If parents would get their kids involved in non team sports and even the team sports that do exist OUTSIDE the school confines, there would be no school teams for libs to use as agenda tools. The best solution is homeschooling, but even a charter school is far better.

It’s like TV. Many Conservatives always find an excuse why they just HAVE to have their sports/whatever channels and bitch the media they fund via their cable bill are evil. Personally I think helping fund Americas demise is a bad idea but some seem to have excuses for everything..

Can’t have cake and eat it too.

It’s not the words that people say - it’s what they think before they speak the words.

To really protect us from words that make people feel sad or threatened the government should address the root cause of the problem.

The perfect solution would be to just execute people who have harsh thoughts about others.

The biggest trash talkers are black athletes. Hope the leftists have fun with that. Oh yeah, they’ll build an exception to the rule for “oppressed minorities”.

Sharia Law coming soon to a city near you.

Trash talk is as much a part of the sport as playing it. Makes for a more competitive match too. Need to keep the nanny cry over spilled mikl PC wusses out of the arena. Probably just a bunch of pinheads that have never played sports in their lives making those stupid decisions

Cafeteria style cable is the wave of the future, when it gets here I'll have 5 channels at the most. If I were the only one in the family it would be 2 channels. Isn't the day that MSNBC et al bites the dust going to be special.

I read in Forbes, about a year ago, that there already is a company somewhere in the south that offers a form of this service.

Depends on the school and what the faculty will tolerate.

I coached high school baseball in SoCal for three seasons and aside from the too common f-bombs, I never recall trash-talking to or from any of the teams we faced.

Conduct related to race, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, religion or FREE SPEECH will not be tolerated.

Unlike football and basketball, baseball lacks a culture of trash talking. It also seems to lack the same high percentage of black athletes.
