Bill Maher Defends Paula Deen After Firing: ‘Do We Always Have to Make People Go Away?’

Bill Maher offered one of the rare public defenses of embattled celebrity chef Paula Deen on Friday, asking why “we always have to make people go away” for saying bad words.

Bill Maher Defends Paula Deen After Firing: Do We Always Have to Make People Go Away? AP

Deen was dropped by the Food Network following her public apology after it emerged this week that she had admitted to using the n-word in the past.

“I’m just wondering,” Maher began on his HBO show “Real Time,” “if you’re 66 years old and you were raised in Georgia and you were a child before the civil rights movement, do you get a bit of a pass — ”

“No — ” members of his panel cut in.

” — or you say no, you’ve had 40 years to get used to — I agree,” Maher said. But he added a few moments later, “I also think people shouldn’t have to lose their shows and go away when they do something bad.”

“It’s just a word, it’s a wrong word, she’s wrong to use it, but do we always have to make people go away?” Maher asked.

The panel again disagreed, with former New York Times columnist Bob Herbert saying, “For me that word is the line…nobody should be using that word.”

Maher asked whether “we should ban rap records” and said that in America, “you’ve gotta be a free country, even to be an a–hole.”

He’s triangulating. She’s somebody he can defend on “free speech” grounds because he doesn’t think there are other serious grounds to reproach her. You could say it’s because they don’t disagree politically. Soon enough a case will come up involving somebody he wants to take down and he’ll do so.

I’m a white guy from Oakland. During lunch time or after school (its been many yeras now) we’d all play basketball. To many black kids, the game was playfully called N-ball. I must have heard it called N-ball about a billion times in my lifetime. One day, I said, “You guys want to play N-Ball?”...or something to that effect. I got death stares and one dude said, “What do you mean by that?” It was almost like I was the guy who cut off Kunte Kintes foot (from Roots)...thats how much tension I stirred up. I tried to joke my way out of it but, it wasn’t funny to anyone and I learned my lesson that day.

My point is: If black people insist in using this word, it’s going to seep its way into the larger culture....including white culture. Thats how it works. Either the N-word is taboo for all of us or taboo for none of us. How can a woman be fired for using a word that is basically common in most inner cites?

I say it’s politically correct liberal madness. She apologized. Move on!!!

Remember how venomously and successfully the race pimps attacked Perry for having hunted at a ranch that had a rock somewhere from the 60s painted Niggerhead?

I assume Bob Herbert would also back firing all journalists who have used the term 'teabagger'...

That said, Paula should not have used the term... There are still people alive today who lived with the sting of that word - people who were powerless to fight back. Don't know if people should be fired - that's up to the company - but I wouldn't buy from a company with spokespeople who used the term. So they could kiss my business goodbye.

Yes, blacks are allowed to disparage whites. The reason for that is that blacks are an officially recognized grievance group by the liberals. We have to be sensitive about the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws and all that.

Grievance groups are not held to the same standards of behavior as straight white people are.

“I don’t particularly like Paula Deen because I think she’s a smarmy “movie-Southerner,” and her restaurant (which people stand on line for hours to visit) sux.”

Not saying it’s worth a three hour wait, but Lady & Sons certainly doesn’t suck. Would love to see what places you’re going to by way of comparison.

About 25 mi from NYC there was a lake in an area in the Ramapo Mtns called Stag Hill that for years was called N****r Pond. Ironically the people that live around there known as “Jackson Whites”, are a mixed race group whose ancestry includes runaway slaves as well as Lenni Lenapi, Mohican and other tribes. And yes I’ve heard some of them call each other THAT word.

The fried chicken tasted like Col. Sanders and was cold. The sides (and Southern sides can be fabulous) were practically out of a can.

Says the guy who hates Christians, and would seek the guillotine for Sarah Palin (almost anyone on the right) if they merely burped.

This is one libtard too many for me.

it must be great to be a liberal like maher, and to be able to ask a reasonable question, but if you are a white, Christian conservative male, you’re not allowed to say anything.

She will probably go back to being an agoraphobic. She had extreme problems with it before cooking got her out. BTW, I am a Southern girl, raised in Charleston in the sixties and my mama would have washed my mouth out with soap if I had ever uttered that word. It’s all in the raisin’.

I don’t care for Bill Maher or Paula Deen. But if I had to choose one for a next door neighbor, I’d pick Paula Deen. She apparently talks trashy once every 20 years, while Maher does it every day.

As for the N-word, it’s trash talk. It defines the person using it as uncouth. But it’s hardly a capital crime and the concern about it is way out of proportion to any harm it causes. It’s just one of many foul words that have no place in civil discourse.

Sticks and stones and all that.

Interesting defender. It is good that the “Liberal Community” feeds on its own; i.re. firing them. However, there is nothing the liberal “community” fears more than the word for which this poor woman loses her job. The forlorn attempt to suppress the use of the term is ridiculous as the term in question is often so descriptive and places the object of the term in proper perspective.

One of those rare times when Bill Maher actually makes sense.

Only because it's self-serving.

Maher's is actually preemptively defending his future "privilege" to call Sarah Palin a c*** and tweets like, “Wow, Jesus just f*cked #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler ‘Hey, Buffalo’s killing them’”

I'd like to know why the single word "n*gger" is more offensive than the above. ANYBODY??

Yes, they are an odd little enclave there. I think they are basically hillbillies. There’s been some problems up there lately, I think there was an incident with some cops and somebody got shot, maybe killed (I can’t remember if it was a cop or a non=cop) and then I think they were/are having some “Kelo” like eminent domain disputes with the powers that be.
