ATLIXCO, MexicoWith the U.S. Senate locked in debate over an immigration overhaul, a crucial question is whether new laws and a recovering U.S. economy will draw a new flood of Mexican immigrants.
Miriam López's case could help provide an answer.
After five years in the U.S., and with acceptance letters to several American universities in hand, she moved back to her home in Mexico.
Ms. López had crossed the border to the U.S. illegally when she was about 12 years old, following her father. Ms. López became salutatorian at her American high school. But she said sherealized she wouldn't be able to attend college without legal documents.
Now 20 years old, she's an international-relations student at Tecnológico de Monterrey in the southeastern state of Puebla and sees more reasons to build her life in Mexico. "Most of the people that I know have been to the states and migrated and moved back," Ms. López said. "They already know what it's like. It's not like you're going to go there and be happy forever. You have to work hard."
After four decades of persistent migration from Mexico to the U.S., the net immigration flow has stopped in recent years.
Critics warn that a bill now before the Senate, which proposes opening a pathway to citizenship for many who now are in the country illegally, would again make the U.S. a magnet for more illegal immigrants.
But experts from both sides of the border are skeptical that the U.S. will see an upsurge in immigration from Mexico, citing a strengthening Mexican economy, increases in border security that have made crossing costlier and more dangerous, and demographic changes in Mexico, such as a falling fertility rate.

Yeah, the same "experts" that keep quoting we have 11 million illegals here in the US.
The usual garbage from the open_borders_Wall_Street_Journal. The immigration invasion continues and the present push for amnesty is being funded by billionaires such as Mark Zuckerberg, Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers. They all want more cheap labor now!
> “ Ms. López said. “They already know what it’s like. It’s not like you’re going to go there and be happy forever. You have to work hard.” “
Sounds like Ms. López can’t ‘cut it’.
This lie is to calm the American public and thus ease the passage of amnesty.
Well, that settles it. Mexicans just don’t won’t to come to the US anymore so there’s no reason at all to delay granting amnesty to the few already here. Half of them will probably bo back home, anyway, which proves there is no need to think about additional border security for the future.
How helpful of the WSJ to provide us with this information in such a timely fashion.
I have to keep reiterating this because I have yet to hear a single conservative voice factor in the bringing in of family members. Once that is accomplished - which is a part of the amnesty half to 2/3rds of Mexico will be able to legally come to the US. Anyway you parse it this is fr&%!n’ insane. They’ll get preferred minority status and welfare perks and many will have family homes to return to if/when things get bad; most neither know nor care about America’s heritage, culture or laws unless it is to denigrate and blame evil capitalist white western culture for all their problems.
They are colonizing the USA. All their cartels become legal American/Mexican cartels and once accomplished won;t be able to go back. Forever changes our culture and our political system and undercuts the Republic. Most people I talk to don;t even give a care. They just don’t want to appear to be bigots or racists. I’m not a violent person but this makes my blood boil. Personally, I believe the fix is in and Amnesty breezes through - put the fork in. game over - most people will think its just dandy and the media will tell us how most people support a path to citizenship.
This is absolute hogwash. Multiple CPB agents I know say the number of illegals crossing has gone way up due to hopes raised by the cartel of 8.
Also, I cannot provide documentation of such, but a credible source has told me that the reason all the cartel related killings has gone way down (in Mexico) is because the Mexican ‘government’ made a deal with the cartels to quit going after them if they stopped the killings on the Mexican side of the border.
Dems now look to get more illegals from Arica and Asia whilst increasing food stamps and welfare for them
Consider the source.
Yeah..self deportation should be easy. Let’s try that for a change.
Why let the weak economy factor into your decision to break into the USA when the welfare state hasn’t scaled back in the least?
Immigration comes in waves and the wave of immigrants from Mexico and Latin America has peaked already. IMHO, the next wave will be coming from Asia, including the Middle East.
Good then whats the rush to legalize them?
A month ago...on the business channel...they sent a reporter south of the border. Here was a middle-class Mexican family who was very secure...new car, nice apartment, dressed well, and shopping at a Wal-Mart. They had no desires to run north of the border. They introduced all of their friends...same story.
So I’m going to make a statement that might draw fire. I don’t think there’s that many Mexicans crossing the border today...but more likely to be more Hondurans and El Salvadorans. Toss in some Chinese, some Russians, and some Iraqis...and that likely makes up the rest.
We have tons of Central Americans coming here illegally all the time. They have learned from and copied the Mexicans. We also get a lot more illegals these days from the Northern nations of Latin America. Such as Ecuador/Peru/Colombia etc
We are still getting an invasion of Mexican illegals and I would say it is as bad as ever, as numerous as ever. The Mexican middle class you mention is very small.
Maybe not as many middle class Mexicans, but still plenty of uneducated, impoverished ones still coming this way. I tend to disbelieve the notion that middle class mexicans wouldn’t come here either considering the lack of safety and corruption in their own country.
I lived in MX, for a couple of years....I don’t think the MXs are going to register....why should they, most are comfortable in the shadows...everything is free....why come forward and have to pay taxes and health care, which by the way....is free in Mexico
What, she's not a "dreamer"? What sort of roadblock did she encounter? No DACA for this lady?
To ensure that none of them self deport before the U.S. devolves into the same type of turd world sh*thole as Mexico. If too many of them did that, it would delay the process.
Right. Arrests at the border have dropped dramatically because if an ICE agent *gasp* apprehends and illegal invader, they are disciplined for it.
Contrary to other posters, I too know many CBP agents and they tell me the apprehension levels have gone up in miniscule amounts. Comparing a rural sector like El Centro which totaled over 230,000 in 2000 to a little over 23,000 in 2012 and Tucson at over 600,000 in 2000 to approx 123,000 last year. Early reports from 2013 shows numbers flat or up 2-3% at most.
Well the city of Puebla (in Puebla state) is pretty cool. Rich history, great architecture, plenty of universities, nearby volcano and great local cuisine and nightlife. Safe as cities go without the cartel drama. I can see how one could fashion a nice life there.
WATCH IN DEEP ADMIRATION AS OUR HEROINE ANN COULTER DOES MORE THAN HER PART TO DEFEAT THE IMMIGRATION..BILL...SHE’S OUT THERE EVERYWHERE SHE’S MAGNIFICENT...THANKS ANN!
WSJ’a agenda is cheap labor.
Find it strange when the excuse is being given that while the government knows whats going on in 300 million citizens lives but because the illegals are not citizens and in “the shadows” according to Florida’s Senator Rubio the US doesn’t know who they are or where they’re comming from so we must make them citizens..
THE QUESTION IS SENATORS AND CONGRESS MEMBERS ...WHY ARE YOU SO SET ON IMPORTING LOW WAGE LABORERS MAINLY FROM ONE COUNTRY WHICH TAKE UP JOBS OUR YOUTH COULD BE PERFORMING AND HURTING THE BLACK AMERICAN JOB MARKET ?
FR’s ; are urged to visit their respective Congressional Representatives and let them know their feelings
WHEN IT COMES TO AMNESTY
THIS IS THE MEXICAN PART NO ONE DARES MENTION
If you agree with the above and the following please don’t let it lay here in FR-land. Pass it on to to your favorite talk show host and to your US legislators. PUSH THE HASTERT RULE.
ONE NATIONALITY AMNESTY SKEWS QUOTAS. HURTS OTHERS FROM SOUTH AMERICA, AND SKILLED LABOR QUOTAS FROM OTHER NATIONS ...WORSE YET OFFERING AMNESTY FOR NATIONALS FROM A COUNTRY THAT HAS CLAIMS ON OUR NATIONAL TERRITORY THAT COULD AND HAS TURNED INTO PROBLEMS FOR BORDER STATES CLAIMED BY MEXICO ?
In that May 3rd speech Obama gave before the Mexican Anthropological Museum in which he blamed America for the violence in Mexico I believe he went even futhur. Theres a inference but never referenced by name to the Gasden purchase and border settlements US made with Mexico where Obama hinted he seems to side with the Mexican claims. Would those in attendence share that view is a question that should be asked, because I believe they would,.he does.
SOLVING THE ‘LATINO” PROBLEM A MYTH HISPANIC IS NOT A RACE BUT A POLITICAL LINGUISTIC CONTRIVANCE ...don’t fall into the hyphenated Americans trap created by the hyphenated political party ...The DEMO-COMS
The Mexicans have been getting most favorable treatment above the rest of our neighbors both north and south. Theyre permitted to cross our borders and enter illegally and are allowed access to rights of citizenship (with the exception of voting which if the democrat party regains control over the House will happen) other nationals entering this country dont get.. Worse yet the Obama government has been working hand in glove with Mexican movements such as LaRaza supporting the Mexican claims which are also supporting “Amnesty”.
Also by allowing Mexicans to do this any quota ration for immigration from other south and central American countrys are taken up by Mexicans while that country is laying claim to a large chunk of our sovereign territory is a recipe for later serious problems which are happening now.
ARE MEXICAN ILLEGALS SQUATTERS PERPETUATING THE MEXICAN CLAIMS ?
We are already seeing the result of this in certain areas claimed by the Mexicans. Their national flag (standard) gets displayed over ours. Where there is a controlling number of Mexican nationals (illegals). Its displayed over certain institutions particularly schools accompanied by riots and disturbances. Blacks are threatend by Mexicans in certain sections of citys in those areas. Were courting trouble by not placing a value on our sovereignty and our citizenship.
MOST COINS OF THE REALM HAVE TWO FACES WHAT ABOUT HOW ARE AMERICAN CITIZENS LIVING IN MEXICO BEING TREATED ?
Worse yet if a US citizen goes into Mexico never mind illegaly but legally. Theyll get 2nd class treatment. Land ownership in title is prohibited period. And there are a slew of regulations they must comply with. Which doesnt apply to a citizen of Mexico
THE SOLUTION ASSERT OUR SOVEREIGNTY AND TALK RECIPROCITY .
By not insisting on reciprocity particularly on those who have entered this country illegally were offering no incentive for assimilation and were not easing the burden for our fellow citizens who for what ever reason decided to live in Mexico.
ENOUGH OF THE ONE WORLD SOCIALISM ...BRING BACK SOVEREIGNTY AND SANITY TO OUR COUNTRY .....BRING BACK BELIEF IN GOD ...THIS GOVERNMENT OUT OUR FACE..... OUR RELIGIONS..... AND OUR BEDROOMS..
Finally some sanity on this issue. Thank you sir.
Or is it that Mexico sucks more?
Well then I guess we will have to sweeten the pot to attract more. After all I can’t understand the reluctance to be part of Obama’s utopian paradise.
This is a suspiciously convenient story especially now.
RE: Or is it that Mexico sucks more?
I’d say Mexico sucks less, otherwise why stay home?
RE: I dont think theres that many Mexicans crossing the border today...but more likely to be more Hondurans and El Salvadorans. Toss in some Chinese, some Russians, and some Iraqis...and that likely makes up the rest.
While we give a lot of focus on border crossings, let us not ignore the other huge elephant in the room -— MANY OF THE ILLEGALS ARE NOT BORDER CROSSERS BUT ARE THOSE WHO FIRST CAME HERE LEGALLY BUT OVER-STAYED THEIR VISAS.
Some say nearly half of the illegals are visa-overstayers.
They are the ones who are difficult to catch.
