ATLIXCO, MexicoWith the U.S. Senate locked in debate over an immigration overhaul, a crucial question is whether new laws and a recovering U.S. economy will draw a new flood of Mexican immigrants.
Miriam López's case could help provide an answer.
After five years in the U.S., and with acceptance letters to several American universities in hand, she moved back to her home in Mexico.
Ms. López had crossed the border to the U.S. illegally when she was about 12 years old, following her father. Ms. López became salutatorian at her American high school. But she said sherealized she wouldn't be able to attend college without legal documents.
Now 20 years old, she's an international-relations student at Tecnológico de Monterrey in the southeastern state of Puebla and sees more reasons to build her life in Mexico. "Most of the people that I know have been to the states and migrated and moved back," Ms. López said. "They already know what it's like. It's not like you're going to go there and be happy forever. You have to work hard."
After four decades of persistent migration from Mexico to the U.S., the net immigration flow has stopped in recent years.
Critics warn that a bill now before the Senate, which proposes opening a pathway to citizenship for many who now are in the country illegally, would again make the U.S. a magnet for more illegal immigrants.
But experts from both sides of the border are skeptical that the U.S. will see an upsurge in immigration from Mexico, citing a strengthening Mexican economy, increases in border security that have made crossing costlier and more dangerous, and demographic changes in Mexico, such as a falling fertility rate.

Yeah, the same "experts" that keep quoting we have 11 million illegals here in the US.
Hard one...
The usual garbage from the open_borders_Wall_Street_Journal. The immigration invasion continues and the present push for amnesty is being funded by billionaires such as Mark Zuckerberg, Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers. They all want more cheap labor now!
> “ Ms. López said. “They already know what it’s like. It’s not like you’re going to go there and be happy forever. You have to work hard.” “
Sounds like Ms. López can’t ‘cut it’.
This lie is to calm the American public and thus ease the passage of amnesty.
Well, that settles it. Mexicans just don’t won’t to come to the US anymore so there’s no reason at all to delay granting amnesty to the few already here. Half of them will probably bo back home, anyway, which proves there is no need to think about additional border security for the future.
How helpful of the WSJ to provide us with this information in such a timely fashion.
I have to keep reiterating this because I have yet to hear a single conservative voice factor in the bringing in of family members. Once that is accomplished - which is a part of the amnesty half to 2/3rds of Mexico will be able to legally come to the US. Anyway you parse it this is fr&%!n’ insane. They’ll get preferred minority status and welfare perks and many will have family homes to return to if/when things get bad; most neither know nor care about America’s heritage, culture or laws unless it is to denigrate and blame evil capitalist white western culture for all their problems.
They are colonizing the USA. All their cartels become legal American/Mexican cartels and once accomplished won;t be able to go back. Forever changes our culture and our political system and undercuts the Republic. Most people I talk to don;t even give a care. They just don’t want to appear to be bigots or racists. I’m not a violent person but this makes my blood boil. Personally, I believe the fix is in and Amnesty breezes through - put the fork in. game over - most people will think its just dandy and the media will tell us how most people support a path to citizenship.
This is absolute hogwash. Multiple CPB agents I know say the number of illegals crossing has gone way up due to hopes raised by the cartel of 8.
Also, I cannot provide documentation of such, but a credible source has told me that the reason all the cartel related killings has gone way down (in Mexico) is because the Mexican ‘government’ made a deal with the cartels to quit going after them if they stopped the killings on the Mexican side of the border.
Dems now look to get more illegals from Arica and Asia whilst increasing food stamps and welfare for them
Consider the source.
Yeah, sure.
Yeah..self deportation should be easy. Let’s try that for a change.
Why let the weak economy factor into your decision to break into the USA when the welfare state hasn’t scaled back in the least?
Immigration comes in waves and the wave of immigrants from Mexico and Latin America has peaked already. IMHO, the next wave will be coming from Asia, including the Middle East.
Good then whats the rush to legalize them?
