Georgia teen wants $2 million after school uses Facebook photo without permission

When bikini-clad Chelsea Chaney posed next to a cutout of Snoop Dogg during a family vacation, she had no idea that the photo would be shown to hundreds of strangers at a Fayette County Schools district seminar. An administrator used the photo to demonstrate the dangers of posting to social media.

You never know who’s creeping through your Facebook profile.

To prove that point, a high school administrator in Fayette County, Ga., grabbed a revealing photo from a student’s Facebook page and showed it to hundreds of students and teachers at a districtwide seminar.

The student in the photo, 17-year-old Chelsea Chaney, is now suing her district for $2 million, saying the picture was used without her permission.

In the photo, taken during a family trip, Chaney wears a red bikini and poses next to a cardboard cutout of rapper Snoop Dogg. The young woman, now a college freshman at the University of Georgia, says she posted the photo to the social media site thinking that only her friends and friends of friends could view it.

Ooops, wrong decade.

They didn’t make ‘em like that when I was in HS, back in the early-mid 70s 60s.

From the article, it appears that she is not complaining about the publication of the picture, but the context of the publication -— that is, “here is an example of a girl having sex and drinking who put it on Facebook where it will haunt her.”

Even if you DELETE your (Facebook) Account-your pics/postings are kept FOREVER (they say 60 days), just like the NSA. (Storage Space is so CHEAP, these days). As one poster used the analogy about Negatives and prints in the old days, there are millions of copies of everything, these days, erasing the NET is expensive and never complete unless your a resident of the White Hut.

An interview of blondie aired on local Atlanta TV yesterday morning. She said that she was “shocked” and embarressed to see her photo used. Give me a break. She couldn’t have been more pleased. And her local hick lawyer was a moron. Q: “What laws did the school disrict break?” A: “Federal law, state law and the U.S. Constitution.” Oh. Now that was specific, now I understand. Actually, I spewed my morning oatmeal all over the TV screen.

again, it is the context of the publiciity.

For example, let’s say someone took a lovely picture of you. Made you look very hadsome (or pretty, don’t know if you are male or female). You were pleased and put it on facebook.

Then, let’s say I used it on a burglar alarm product -— because there are pedopholes on the loose. The context made you look like a pedophile. Went all over town.

Well, you be pissed, and could sue for what is called “false light slander.”

This is false light slander, in that apparently she is not having sex and not drinking.

So, does she get any money? Doubtful. Or just a bit.

The School (government) had no right to publish the photo. She should get paid and the school should be punished.
