Obama orders new rules on coal-fired plants, sets condition for Keystone pipeline

President Obama pressed ahead Tuesday with his climate change agenda, calling for new regulations on coal-fired power plants and setting a strict condition for the approval of the controversial Keystone pipeline.

"We need to act," Obama said, in an address at Georgetown University.

Even before he spoke, the president's proposal drew condemnation from the coal industry and lawmakers whose states rely on that industry for jobs.

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican from West Virginia, said the proposal "could deliver an unrecoverable blow to coal-rich states" like hers.

But Obama claimed climate change is having "profound impacts" on the planet and must be addressed. He called for the U.S. to lead the world in a "coordinated assault" on the issue.

Going around Congress and unveiling what was likely to be his most controversial plank, Obama said he was ordering the Environmental Protection Agency to create the first-ever carbon emissions limits for existing power plants.

The state of West Virginia should just continue using coal-fired plants under previous restrictions from the Bush administration.

Just where in the Constitution does it give the executive branch authority to impose these regulations, especially in the absence of Congressional action. Even with Congressional action, how does the federal government have authority over this matter, especially if a neighboring state is not affected?

I see two courses of action - either ignore the feds, or just shut down all the coal plants and let people deal with intermittent power.

Capito is running for Rockefeller’s seat in the Senate. Let’s hope the people and unions of WV wake up and realize it’s not about the party, it’s about the state.

IIRC OB, the hero of Benghazi, said in an interview before the 2008 election, he was going to m ake it too expensive for coal companies to stay in business. Just getting started.

he OB trifecta. Peace be upon him.

1. Socialize medicine by putting insurance companies out of business. just beginning.

2. Wipe out the republican party. Immigration reform creates millions of new democrat voters.

3. Wipe out fossil fuel use in the US. Gorebull Warming regulations coming.

I've contacted my Senators and Congressman for this very thing. They seem to think this is bluster as the new EPA chief will have to go through the Senate and a President just can't make whatever rules he wants for the EPA to enforce. If that were possible, he could arbitrarily set impossible levels that even a wind farm couldn't meet. There must be some science and economic guidelines.

I hope the congress is right. Recently the EPA tried to make rainwater a pollutant. If rain fell on your property, you were responsible for the runoff. Congress stopped that.

He said that while other toxic chemicals like mercury are regulated, power plants can dump "unlimited amounts" of carbon pollution.

"That's not right, it's not safe. And it needs to stop," Obama said.

Oh, Good Lord... Carbon pollution is now NOT SAFE?? Then, STOP BREATHING A-hole!

BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY... no signs of intelligent life here....
