New York City's plan to bolster its infrastructure to deal with climate change is only the beginning of a long struggle to fortify cities around the world.
Cities and nations around the world are rapidly coming to grips with the fact that regardless of how one feels about the source of climate change, data show that sea levels are on the rise at an accelerating rate. Meanwhile, global insurance industry group the Geneva Association warned this week that warming oceans are making some coastal regions -- including parts of the U.K. and the U.S. -- "uninsurable" by industry standards, and that the number of cities meeting that criteria will likely grow as sea levels rise and oceans continue to warm.
The same is true elsewhere in the world, and the growing consensus -- largely spawned by a spate of intense natural disasters over the past decade -- that governments need to get more involved in mitigating threats related to climate change is giving rise to a new kind of extreme civil engineering and architecture that is well-positioned for a global boom as cities and states attempt to bolster their own resiliency in the face of rising sea levels and increased severe weather activity.

Liberals only want to fight wars with imaginary enemies - like Global Warming.
At great cost they are prepared to combat rising sea levels that never actually rise.
And they have already put into place plans to tax us into oblivion, fighting soaring temperatures that manage to stubbornly never actually increase.
But it’s not fair to judge liberals using outmoded metrics like actual results.
They should be judged on the goodness of their intent and the amount of treasure and energy they expend accomplishing nothing.

Assuming that the models are correct (and they aren’t), and the coastal regions are looking at a one-meter rise in sea levels over a period of ONE HUNDRED YEARS, what is the problem exactly?
That’s one inch every 2.5 years. Any civilization that can’t deal with that deserves to perish.
Yeah, my thoughts as well. Show us the data, not the models. As far as I can tell, the sea level is rising at a rate that might threaten a coastal city like NYC in a millenia or two.

Well, at some times in the past, large parts of the country were under water and at other times they were under ice. So they think the having NYC on dry land is the “right” way? Says who?
Let’s say they build a great huge seawall along the major coastal cities. When it’s finished, NYC and DC will probably be effectively decommissioned by an EMP.
I thought I read somewhere else that the Atlantic may disappear due to cracks in the oceanic floor. So just maybe all this ice melting will offset the lost water that gets drained out through those cracks.
This means the left should be cheering global warming! Just think of the jobs! Moving or reinforcing New York to survive the rapidly rising oceans? Think of it as a massive stimulus program!
I’ve seen diagrams showing the successively wider Manhattan coastline over the past couple of centuries....I think the sea has more to fear from Manhattan than Manhattan has to fear from the sea.
