Snowden hid copies of secret NSA documents in case something happens to him

A trove of classified documents supplied to The Guardian newspaper by NSA leaker Edward Snowden has been copied and shared with several people around the globe, journalist Glenn Greenwald told The Daily Beast on Tuesday.

Greenwald, the Guardian reporter who first began publishing National Security Agency documents earlier this month after meeting with the former intelligence contractor, told journalist Eli Lake that Snowden made arrangements to ensure others around the world have encrypted copies of that information should any circumstances allow the data or its source to be compromised.

Snowden “has taken extreme precautions to make sure many different people around the world have these archives to insure the stories will inevitably be published,” Greenwald said. He added that the files are “highly encrypted” and corresponding passwords to render them readable have not yet been distributed.

According to Lake, Greenwald said, “if anything happens at all to Edward Snowden, he told me he has arranged for them to get access to the full archives.” Greenwald previously claimed that Snowden provided him with the archives of "thousands" of documents, dozens of which he considered to be newsworthy. Revelations published thus far by The Guardian and attributed to Snowden have generated international headlines and responses from presidential administrations worldwide.

The latest news from Greenwald comes in the midst of an international manhunt for Snowden that has made awkward the relations between the United States and other nations around the globe. The US unsealed an indictment against Snowden on Friday, but has been unable to extradite him to the country where he faces charges of espionage.

I'm sure Hastings would not have been interested, since his main concern in life was "outing" military personnel who did not love Obama sufficiently.

In his online Q&A, Snowden stated that he specifically sought out his Booz Allen contract job because he believed it would enable him to have enough access to steal all the data he wanted access to.

He planned everything fairly carefully.

I'm sure the actual downloading only took a few minutes.

It looks like he was planning this for a long time. Time will tell but from where I stand I would like to know what really the NSA was and is doing. With our government under the control of King Obama and his communists empire, it is scary.

It’s not as if he had to locate, open and photograph physical documents. Nor did he have to make physical copies of said documents, and find vaults to store them in. How long does it take you to copy a computer file onto an encrypted thumb drive.

The collecting is not the issue, that’s easy.

How did he get in position. That’s the question.

I’m thinking something has “happened” to him. The KGB has him (Oh silly me, there is no more KGB in modern, freedom loving, democratic Russia) I doubt that if I wanted to strike a blow for openness, freedom of speech and government transparency and against corruption, I would go first to China and then on to Russia.

There is plenty of dark humor here seeing that Snowden planned to next travel either Cuba, Ecuador or Venezuela. Anyhow, thanks for the wake up call.

Good point...

Makes you think about why they waited so long to issue a warrant....They were following him in one way or another.

What goes around comes around, baby! The same creeps who celebrated Daniel Ellsberg’s publishing the unexpurgated Pentagon Papers in the NYT, instead of PROSECUTING the b@sturd; are now twisting their hankies in knots and decrying Snowden’s expose’ of the unconstitutional outrages by runaway, power-mad cabinet departments, undoubtedly with the blessing of the Poser-in Cheap; a wink is as good as a nod!

He WAS, after all a Systems Administrator. That means he could change accesses, copy, even hide files.

MY guess ? He created a hidden share, and then elevated to superuser, did a stealth copy, and wrote it to the hidden share.

When he had everything he wanted, he harvested to several large USB drives, then wiped the record of the USB insertion and file write.

Or he booted a workstation from a USB key with a Linux image on it, and copied with no traces on the physical filesystems. . .

The audit records will tell, but none of us will ever see or hear what they learned from him. . .
