Roskam: IRS Credit Card Excesses A ‘Pathetic Joke’

Rep. Peter Roskam (R., Ill.) called news of Internal Revenue Service workers being allowed to use agency credit cards to buy such things as wine, pornography and diet pills a “pathetic joke” on Fox News Tuesday:

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN: This may seem like a small number, but even like a $50 bottle of wine, that’s a couple weeks of student lunches for some families. Why are these people just stealing? Are you going to refer this to the Justice Department to tell Eric Holder, open a criminal investigation and let’s stop looking the other way?

ROSKAM: Without question, the work that the Ways and Means Committee has done, the work that the Oversight Committee has done is why we’re able to have this discussion. It’s basically pressure from Capitol Hill that’s driving this. Now with the Inspector General’s report and other types of inquiries and oversights is why this is all coming to a head. I think it’s in this larger context of just an abuse of power, and a manipulation. Think about the sort of pathetic joke that this is. They’re taking resources, abusing resources, and then these same people are deciding who gets to participate in the public square and to debate these things.

Having worked around the gov’t for most of my life....I can say this...no one really wants to be the government-purchase-card (GPC) holder. It detracts from your regular job, and can consume twenty to forty hours a month in record-keeping (if you did what you were supposed to do). About every six to twelve months....someone does an audit over one item purchased and you have to pull this record out and worry that some audit will note issues with the purchase. All of your actions rate against your yearly performance.

Finally, I can say this over the past decade of observing people with the cards....about a ten percent of them should have taken a psychological test because they just weren’t competent to handle it. If you aren’t detail orientated or honest about the use of it....you’ve got issues waiting for an audit.

".......a $50 bottle of wine......"

OK, in DC and to Greta, a $50 bottle of wine may be cheap, however, for some of us, $20 to $40 is about as high as we spend and it's OUR MONEY, not taking from our neighbors to buy it.

I just asked my wife how much we owe for our taxes, I am calling them tomorrow and I plan on reducing our payment or I will start the revolution.

IMO no government employee should have a credit card for any reason unless it is in their own name, billed directly to them and based on their own credit. If they had to use their own resources and then wait for reimbursement after submitting adequate documentation, some of this would stop.

I also do not think any government employee should be able to accumulate frequent flier miles when they are on government business. Our Rep flies back and forth from DC to Houston every week. He has enough miles accumulated at taxpayer expense to be able to take his family flying most anywhere they want for the next ten years.

If they are going to allow the ff miles then the value of their air travel should be taxed as income. Let them take their pick.

You bet it would.

‘A pathetic joke’? IF this had occured under bush- the left woudl be screaming their heads off demanding the IRS be disbanded- however, all there are from the right are ‘murmurings that htey should be disbanded with noone really doing much besides holding hearigns htat will go NOWHERE because the GOP are allowing the IRS and Holder to investigate themselves- and by golly, wouldn’t ya know it- no evidence of wrongdoign was uncovered by both parties

Just heard greta on fox news say about bengazi somethign along htel ien of ‘perhaps soem on the left are feeling guilty abotu what happened”

Gee- really? They feel guilty? Well by golly, that’s enouygh punishment for those poor folks- feelign guity, gee how do they hold up? Cripes- IF it had been bush who gave orders to stand down and then went to bed drunk while Americans fought for hteir lives for hours with NO help coming hteir way- greta woudl be be sayign a hell of a lot more than ‘perhaps soem o nthe right feel guilty’

The lack of outrage by the GOP over these and other serious OUTRAGES committed by dear leader and ilk is as disturbing and outrageous as the actual outrageous acts themselves- it’s no damn wonder the left is walking all over the right- the right have lsot hteir spines

I don't know how it works in the Government, but my company credit card is like that, only when I fill out an expense report any claims that are billed to the credit card are paid directly to the issuer and credited to my account. The company has access to the records on this credit card, and I agree to only use it for business expenses. All meals, airline and hotel expenses *must* be billed to the credit card. The credit card is linked electronically to our travel expense reporting system, which is a great simplification. It makes sense, and is actually results in less paperwork, and *lower* costs. I much prefer it to the old way of getting cash advances and keeping envelops full of receipts.

Way back when I was in the army the only credit cards we used were U.S. Government cards, not VISA, Master Card etc. The card was for fuel only and clearly stated so on the front. For rations and others necessities – like office supplies – I had a “voyage fund” of several thousand dollars cash. On return to port I had three days to summit my paperwork, receipts and leftover cash. Everything had to balance out or I paid the difference from my pocket.
It was a good system, maybe our government bureaucracies should use a similar system.

Sounds like someone at your company has some business snap. Good for them.

When I worked in the Corporate world and traveled every week we were allowed to get an advance. Expense reports had to be turned in within three days after you returned from a trip along with a report covering your reason for the trip, things to be accomplished and results.
No report and the amount of the advance was deducted from your next paycheck.

Audits mean nothing if there isn’t any punishment. That’s why they do it.

That’s the spirit, we all hang together. I am serious, I can’t afford this years taxes and next year I am not paying cause I can’t afford to. I also have a secret weapon, 6 years my Doc gave me. I don’t fear the IRS. and I have nothing to lose.
