Edward Snowden: confusion over name helped him leave Hong Kong

Paperwork from the United States demanding the arrest of Edward Snowden confused his middle name and lacked his passport number, Hong Kong said, defending its decision to allow him to fly to Moscow.

By Malcolm Moore, Beijing

11:27AM BST 26 Jun 2013

Hong Kong's Justice secretary, Rimsky Yuen, said the US had messed up the basic details of its application.

The application listed Mr Snowden's middle name as "James" or simply by the initial "J", but Hong Kong's immigration had the name "Joseph", he said.

"We believe his name needed to be clarified or it would create legal problems," he said.

He added that the US had also failed to provide his passport number. "In our view, passport numbers are key information to identify a person."

The US has lashed out at Hong Kong for failing to detain the former CIA employee and intelligence whistleblower.

The White House has insisted that the paperwork that the US submitted to Hong Kong was in order and arrived "in plenty of time to have prohibited travel".

"We are just not buying this was a technical decision by a Hong Kong immigration official," said Jay Carney, the White House spokesman. "This was a deliberate choice by the government to release the fugitive despite a valid arrest warrant."

For someone that the media and obama (and his people) are trying to characterize as a low level dropout dunce this guy sure seems to be running rings around all of them.

Here we are supplying weapons to Al Qaeda and worried about catching this man for exposing Obama’s plot to destroy the Constitution.

Am I the only one who is enjoying Putin sticking his finger in Obama’s eye? That's how upside down we are, when I'm on the side of the President of Russia over the President of the US.

Wasn’t one of the Boston bombers let back in the country because of a SNFU with paperwork?

Truth be told, Putin appears to be more of a libertarian capitalist than the President of the United States. It is a sad time for America.

BS.....
This guy is under so much surviellience by us, China and a dozen others that his departure was well known....

The request was hand delivered official to official.... Everyone knew who it was for......

That a major paper bought into this nonsense is embarrassing for them....

Geeez...

les incompetent

yes, you have to be careful drafting and not just do some crappy cut and paste. If nothing else, legal docs should be correct.

I used to review civilian warrants for certain legal requirements before the civilian leos could arrest our soldiers. If they weren’t up to par, they got sent back.
That is all that has happened here, the US patched together some garbage and emailed it to Honk Honk but it failed to pass muster.

I’m surprised the DOJ didn’t just twitter the arrest warrant.
