RE :”Does it shut off all communications? Airplane mode and sleep mode are software configuration and not a physical switch. It would be a trivial exercise to activate the audio controls without turning the screen on.”

Given that the phone cant communicate in APM it cant receive a command to do anything in AP mode , not even track you.

Battery Doctor app works great because it logs and reports all functions battery usage and signal transmission is at the top of power usage,.

An IPHONE cannot communicate unless its allowed to transmit, meaning it cant receive at all while transmission is disabled so it cant spy on you anymore than 'find my IPHONE' can find your iphone

Its not a question of whether they can do this. Its a question of whether they want to listen to YOUR phone.

They now have the technological capability to use the microphones in every cell phone to listen to every sound near the phone 24/7/365.241, whether the phone is "on" or not.

They now have the technological capability to sift all the data from every cellphone 24/7/365.241.

Are you going to assume they paid for all that equipment and technology just to let it sit idle?

Those are just conspiracy editorals designed to provoke paranoia and they dont explain anything.

Dang, I called this 12 years ago. I said the next level of hacking will be within the manufacture of the chips. Bam!

Yep, and if it doesn't have an NSA chip in it, it doubtless has a chip made under the aegis of the PLA.

How do you know it can’t receive? Its all software. They can change the software and may already have hidden features installed in every phone to allow them to remotely turn the phone on.

You’re trusting people who have already lied to you. There is nothing in the phone that they cannot do through software.

“So would a small piece of aluminum foil wrapped around the phone, or a tin box and lid.”

The same reason I used to wrap the aluminum foil around my head.

But now I use a collender. It’s much more effective, as it still keeps them from controlling my brain, while allowing me to project my own thoughts through the small holes.

I would surmise that most of the shielding techniques would be effective in blocking the all encompassing dragnet low level recorded surveillance. However, if the NSA wanted to do targeted real time surveillance, I’d imagine they could defeat many of these strategies.

Just because the device is not searching for a signal does NOT mean it won’t RESPOND to one.

Refrigerators won’t make good Faraday cages. The door isn’t connected to the box via metal, that rubber gasket is great for keeping the cold inside, but for radio signals it’s an opening.

RE :”How do you know it can’t receive? Its all software. They can change the software and may already have hidden features installed in every phone to allow them to remotely turn the phone on.”

It cant transmit in APM so it cant receive so it cant transmit.... its that simple. There is nothing to trigger that magic software you cite short a virus with a timer or trigger that does not depend on communications. But say you have a virus that disables AP mode you can detect that too.

RE :”You’re trusting people who have already lied to you. There is nothing in the phone that they cannot do through software”

I trust no-one least of all a nunch of conspiracy hoaxes designed to provoke baseless paranioa based on nothing, based on not one fact.

‘Its all software’ . LOL
That must seem like magic to you LOL

I run an IT security company. I see what people do who don’t have the resources of the NSA or CIA. I also used to work in secure comm in the military. I can talk more about that in the year 2070 when my agreement expires.

I don’t assume anything I do is private.

RE :”Just because the device is not searching for a signal does NOT mean it won’t RESPOND to one.”

Iphones wouldn't work if the communications were that simple.

Maybe you are thinking of that analog walki-talki you had as as a kid. Yes, those could receive without transmission as they were toys in comparison.

It is magic what my team of penetration testers can do. When we hack peoples cell phones, their macs, their servers and their networks and show them just how exposed they are. When we show them the family photos they forgot they put on the server.

Yep, I admit I don’t have a clue how this stuff works.

Soooooo, a transistor radio can't possibly receive because it doesn't transmit?

Check your premises.

Right, and I have X-ray vision too.

Good luck hacking my IPHONE.

Sure it does. In MOST cases, the gap is air. Otherwise, if there’s a conductive connection, it grounds the system.

My experience is with older TEMPEST rooms and tech. We ALWAYS had at least an air gap. . .
