Incomplete Nature gun article correction puts agenda over truth

Posted on 06/27/2013 5:54:15 AM PDT by marktwain

“The News Feature ‘The gun fighter’ wrongly implied that blogger David Codrea had ‘outed’ gun researcher Garen Wintemute,” a correction issued in the June issue of the science journal Nature admitted. “Wintemute had in fact publicized his own work before Codrea’s 2007 blog post.”

Following in the agenda-driven footsteps of political media, Nature, ostensibly a fact-driven and unbiased scientific journal, has jumped on the “gun control” bandwagon, at least that part of it bemoaning a lack of federally-funded “gun violence” studies, with a profile on anti-gun researcher Dr. Garen Wintemute by correspondent Meredith Wadman in its April issue. That article, astonishingly, made reference to a post on this correspondent’s blog from over six years ago.

“By 2008, Wintemute was contending with being outed,” the pre-correction article stated. “David Codrea, the author of a blog called WarOnGuns, had posted Wintemute’s photo online with the note: ‘WARNING! IF YOU SEE THIS MAN, NOTIFY SECURITY IMMEDIATELY.’ The post identified Wintemute by name and called him an ‘anti-gun ‘researcher’ who stalked gun shows with hidden cameras and recorders.

“But by that point,” the paean-masked-as-profile continued, “Wintemute says, he had learned all he could and stopped going to shows.”

The problem with this brief passage is it contains more errors than the mere question of credit for outing, so I wrote to Nature to set the record straight, hoping that honest information brokers would welcome documented facts with validating citations that met their 300-word correspondence guidelines criteria.

This quote needs to be spread far and wide in response the the claim that the NRA stopped the CDC from conducting “research”.

“Absent from Wadman’s article is acknowledgment of the outrageous bias that caused Congress to pull funding for predetermined outcome ‘studies’ in the first place, after ‘Dr. Mark Rosenberg, Director of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Control and Prevention (NCIPC) told The Washington Post: “We need to revolutionize the way we look at guns, like what we did with cigarettes. Now it [sic] is dirty, deadly, and banned,”’” the letter concluded.

The left has corrupted most publications.

That goes hand in hand with Marxist efforts—hugely successful in many areas—to turn science into pseudo-science to advance its political agenda.

Properly speaking, it’s important to label gun-controllers as what they are — “reactionaries”.

Gun control is a throwback to tyrannical regimes of the past. It goes against proven statistical evidence. It most certainly causes harm to society.

The most damning aspect of it as a reactionary faith based objective, is that the only reason it is being advanced today is solely because it is an article of faith, based in false nostalgia and convoluted idealism.
