Skip to comments.Ted Cruz: 'We need to padlock and shut down' the IRS

Sen. Ted Cruz is joining Tea Party activists in calling on Congress to abolish the Internal Revenue Service as the freshman lawmaker made the case from tax reform.
The Texas Republican on Monday said news that the IRS targeted the nonprofit applications of conservative-leaning political groups was an "inspiration" because of how it has sparked "normal American citizens that are standing up for liberty." In the wake of the IRS scandal, Tea Party groups have repeatedly called for the agency to close its doors, and Cruz, a hero of the conservative movement, echoed their sentiments.
"It is a challenge that we all face to limit the power of Washington," Cruz said. "After these revelations of political targeting by the IRS, we need to padlock and shut down the building, abolish the IRS, and move to a flat tax or the FAIR Tax."
Leaders in Congress have publicly expressed a willingness to tackle tax reform, though it seems that Democrats and Republicans every year express similar sentiments without any action. Earlier in the day, a new government study showed profitable corporations paid an effective income tax rate lower than 13 percent in 2010, sparking calls from both sides of the aisle to take another look at the tax code.

A Cruz missile aimed straight at the heart of the beast. Go Cruz!
Why stop at just one of the UnConstitutional alphabet agencies of tyranny?
That would be a great deal to make with them.
We won’t prosecute the crimes... YOU shut your doors and go away.
Just DEFUND it—along with ALL the “Czars” while you’re at it.
The House has the power, doesn’t it??
Cruz has a long list, or have you not been paying attention? Their actions laid bare has only elevated them to the top of it.
Need to, won’t do, can’t do.
He’s the best!
You can be sure that at the IRS there is a bolo for anything with Cruz in ti.
shut it down
I’m sure you’re right.
Burn it down.
Corruption inside the RNC. We need Cruz to speak about this too
I’d love Cruz to call for replacing the whole lot at the RNC with straight, honorable, gentle folk, basically good conservatives.
I’m disposed to never want to deal with the IRS again.
By all means, close it.
“Why stop at just one of the UnConstitutional alphabet agencies of tyranny?”
Because if you aim at all of them you will hit none of them. Concentrate. Focus. You eat the elephant one bite at a time.
Great idea, but it won’t happen with the current crop of scoundrels occupying the Hill.
What we currently think of a government - an enormous, bloated, overbearing leviathan - will cease to exist but there are sufficient excise taxes and tariffs to run a properly-sized government.
We will, however, need to do something with the inner-city refugees that will come pouring of their homes when their EBT cards no longer work.
Fortunately, they failed to disarm ordinary Americans so we should be able to defend ourselves.
Ted is awesome. But he can’t do it alone.
A majority support the IRS because those who pay no or minimal income tax together with the “good government” types constitute a true majority.
> “After these revelations of political targeting by the IRS, we need to padlock and shut down the building, abolish the IRS, and move to a flat tax or the FAIR Tax.”
Senator Cruz, I don’t know if you said these exact words or the writer imagined the ‘flat tax’ part, but with all due respect:
A FLAT TAX NEVER STAYS FLAT!
Flat taxes in our American tax history (there have been several) always get amended to a complex intractable code. There have been more than 20,000 amendments to the tax code since the last major reform in 1986.
The FairTax is the way to go:
man do I ever like this guy.... hope he doesnt let us down like Rubio did (i had really liked HIM too, at one time). things change.
Sifo-Dyas. Paging Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas...
>>Ted is awesome. But he cant do it alone.
So how did Ted Cruz get to be Ted Cruz, anyhow?
I think that’s a process worth understanding.
He’s putting on a little weight. I hope he doesn’t neglect his health.
Cruz can get the nomination on this issue alone.
Either we do this now or we can live in slavery the rest of our lives. It’s our choice.
The real problem is we still have half the population that is stuck on retarded and stuck on government goodies.
You are one of those folks who seem to think that we can just wave a magic wand and make everything we don't like disappear, just like that.
Let me explain it to you. I am typing slow, so you should be able to keep up.
You target one bloated agency, remove it and the legislation and EOs that enabled it, prove that the world didn't end. Then, you select the next bloated agency...repeat.
Okay! That is it. Cruz has let us down like all the other RINOs. Time to get rid of him!
(I hope the Sarc tag wasn't necessary! Just channeling a "Conservative Purist"!)
Oh no! Not another wacko bird!
CRUZ MISSILE FOR PREZ!
Sure, they have always had the power.but they never used it and never will. I think it was around 1996 or 97 when I finally had to accept that the "smaller, less intrusive federal government" line was just another pack of lies.
Because you go for the biggest payoff first. Killing the IRS takes several large teeth out of the maw of the government leviathan.
The irs should be abolished and converted into a day care center where every single government employee, from the president on down to the janitors, including tsa thugs, should be FORCED to attend classes on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution until they can recite them backwards and forwards and tell you why each clause exists. The Federalist Papers should be required reading. Anyone who can’t explain the Constitution should be dismissed never to return.
I love the thought. Not going to happen, though.
Cruz really seems to be the man we need right now. I hope he stays the course.
He looks like Bill Murry in that photo...
“Haaaarmy Training SIR!”
“Why stop at just one of the UnConstitutional alphabet agencies of tyranny?”
Agree. What say we add the ATF to the list? Appears the FBI has been politically compromised so it could use a good scrubbing. NSA is same as FBI, politically compromised and out of control. In fact, virtually every federal agency has lost sight of their purpose or mission, that being to “serve”. Every one of them needs a good purging, especially at the top levels. Clean out the rascals I say!!!! :)
Dead men tell no tales - and they sure can’t restore the health of a Republic.
I hope Cruz takes care of his health so we have him around restoring OURS for a long time.
Who’s your FRiend?
C’mon whoooose your FRiend?
I like Cruz, Bill Murray not so much anymore. Murray and his SNL Useful Idiot cohorts facilitated significant demoralization toward the systemic corruption of this Republic.
Love Ted, he’z doing a great job. Now, introduce legislation that would begin the dismantling of the IRS.
Get with conservatives in the house and begin the push. One can propose till they are blue in the face, introduce a bill and cause other moderate committee chairs and members to be forced to support of foo foo.
In which case, if these members foo foo a bill...we can weed’em out.
Stay away from people with umbrellas!
IRS is a good start, but add the EPA, dept. of Education, BATFE, and just about every other agency that doesn’t directly contribute to our defense or law enforcement, and turn over most of everything left to the states.
With a NRST instead of an income tax, the IRS could be 1/10th the size it is and be prohibited from having contact with individual citizens.
Businesses would collect sales tax like they currently do, and they’d be subject to audit, but not the consumer.
Cruz makes me proud to be a native Texan.
Hey Cruz, get back to me when that windmill actually falls. The IRS will NEVER be abolished in this country. The scandal is over. The MSM has stopped covering it. Congress likes the IRS since it is the biggest wealth transfer system ever devised. Congress writes law(s) that benefits big business and then big business rewards them with contributions.
Make no mistake, when people like Cruz want to demolish the IRS, there are those that want him dead. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING would surprise me with this criminal enterprise we call the U.S. government.
"I charge you to undertake your citizenship with a solemn dedication. Be a leader, but lead only toward the best. Lift up every task you do and every office you hold to the high level of service to God and to your fellowman. So live and serve that those who know you will be inspired to better living. We have too many who use their strength and their brains to exploit others and to gain selfish ends. I charge you to be among those who dedicate their skills and abilities to the common good. Build America on the solid foundations of clean living, honest work, unselfish citizenship and reverence for God, and, whatever others may say or do, you will leave behind you a record of which every Scout may be justly proud."
I don't know if Cruz is an Eagle Scout or not. Based on a quick Google search I don't see that he is.
But - he sure is what more of us who are, should've been.
Folks like Cruz inspire others to be better. That by itself will put a political cross-hair on him. May God bless him.
