Civil war veterans at Gettysburg anniversary in 1913 – in pictures

1-3 July marks the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg, the battle that many historians cite as a key turning point in the US civil war, which left nearly 50,000 Union and Confederate soldiers dead, wounded or captured on Pennsylvania farmland.

In 1913, on the 50th anniversary of the battle, the same fields played host to the largest ever gathering of civil war veterans, where former soldiers from both sides – many in their 70s – returned to commemorate the war

Sumter was being worked on— one poor laggard and some workmen-— then brought to strength. Point of this was it WAS calculated, and started w/ Buchanan, not Lincoln. The memory of it is not pleasant example of being forced to remain in the “union” (like healthcare... or else— same kind of logic), and nothing to do with freedom.

Oh, it (settlement) was discussed. The oligarchs would have their war, sacred to the abolitionists who anointed it. It was coming no matter what. Compensation and liberation— was never going to be borne, by the North or the South. Neither side gave a damn or were too dug in with disparate interests. A sad wasteful story. And the circles discussing were extra political people of reason— builders not destroyers or men of greed.

"Heck, the Democrats were slave owners in the North, too!"

And the Democrats are still the Party of slavers. Now look at the migration of the Democratic Party and you will see where the slavers went. How ironic it is that the Southern Republican states now stand for freedom and the Northern Democrat states stand for enslaving people. It's the mentality/morality of slavers that make them do what they do. Do you see the picture now?

Yet Virginia found themselves being invaded by a Northern Army less than 24 hours after a referendum to secede. Keep in mind that was a referendum to secede - not a referendum to join the Confederacy.

By the time the referendum was held the Virginia militia was already mobilized and had seized and looted the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry and the shipyards at Norfolk.

The governor had already expressed his intention to joint the Confederacy and agreements had already been reached between Virginia and the CSA well before the referendum.

There was even agreement to move the Confederate capital to Richmond by that time, so no one was in doubt about what a "yes" vote to secession in the referendum would mean.

Not to act after the referendum -- when it was clear how things were headed -- would have meant losing more ground to subversives elsewhere in the country.

More here.

Even after Fort Sumter, the Virginia legislature had voted to remain in the Union.

If you mean that the Virginia convention had voted to remain in the union before the surrender of Fort Sumter, that's true. I can't find what you said, though -- you'd have to prove it.

Incredible pix, and thanks for posting. I see that once again we have to go to the British for material that does not shunt this history aside in favor of gay marriage.

I will say this once and depart from the thread. The antics of historical revisionists on both sides are profoundly disrespectful of these men and the sacrifices they made.

Great picture of the boy scouts who were there to help the elderly CW veterans. Boy scouts have a different agenda now I guess.

The Civil War only lasted 4 years. It has gone on at least 12 years here at FR. :)

I stand corrected. The vote against secession occurred eight days prior to Fort Sumter. Yet it was Lincoln's demand for Virginia to raise troops and march against South Carolina which brought about the subsequent secession vote.

To his credit, Lincoln waited until the people had had their referendum before initiating his invasion of Virginia. But the bottom line here is that Virginia was not allowed to peacefully secede against the assurance they had been given in 1788. Hostilities in Virginia were initiated by the invading army of the North.

But if Virginia militia took over and cleared out the arsenal at Harper’s Ferry and seized the shipyards at Norfolk wasn’t that initiating hostilities?

“N-S Historical Revisonist Event. “

Yep. pretty much. Both sides like to tell differing tales than was reported at the time, and people today like to tell a story that didn’t even exist back then.

“I still have the right to tell you what a loser you are ;-)”

Well, when you are elected Jesus Christ you can make the rules. Until then, you’re just another voter.

Without question, those in the Democrap party that are all about welfare are all about the plantation. Sad that their base doesn’t get it. I guess Rush is right, you can’t defeat Santa Claus giving away freebies.

Then you get my point. Nobody gives a sh*t what you think, so you’d have to be Jesus himself to make them care.

Keep in mind that it was Union forces that set fire to the arsenal before Virginia troops arrived on the scene. Again, the aggression was initiated by the North.
