Sowell: The Mindset of the Left: Part III
Creators Syndicate ^ | July 2, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 07/02/2013 11:25:00 AM PDT by jazusamo

The fundamental problem of the political left seems to be that the real world does not fit their preconceptions. Therefore they see the real world as what is wrong, and what needs to be changed, since apparently their preconceptions cannot be wrong.

A never-ending source of grievances for the left is the fact that some groups are "over-represented" in desirable occupations, institutions and income brackets, while other groups are "under-represented."

From all the indignation and outrage about this expressed on the left, you might think that it was impossible that different groups are simply better at different things.

Yet runners from Kenya continue to win a disproportionate share of marathons in the United States, and children whose parents or grandparents came from India have won most of the American spelling bees in the past 15 years. And has anyone failed to notice that the leading professional basketball players have for years been black, in a country where most of the population is white?

Most of the leading photographic lenses in the world have — for generations — been designed by people who were either Japanese or German. Most of the leading diamond-cutters in the world have been either India's Jains or Jews from Israel or elsewhere.

Not only people but things have been grossly unequal. More than two-thirds of all the tornadoes in the entire world occur in the middle of the United States. Asia has more than 70 mountain peaks that are higher than 20,000 feet and Africa has none. Is it news that a disproportionate share of all the oil in the world is in the Middle East?

Sowell knocks a homer again and again. Ever since Rousseau floated the fantasy concept of the “noble savage”, people on the left have defied reality and human nature. The problem is that they perceive human nature as basically good, and if it isn’t, external forces can shape it into something good. However, human nature is capable of both good and bad, and family, faith, tradition and culture are much more reliable influences on human behavior than external or government forces. The question Sowell does not ask is this: after three centuries at least of evidence that government is more often the problem than the solution (pick a country, never solving the problems they address and usually increasing them (violent crime, runaway illegal immigration, permanent underclasses, violence against women, youth lawlessness, you name it, then either those on the left are incredibly ignorant of history or they are willingly attempting to undo Western Culture. I am placing my bet on the latter. No one can be that stupid.

And if the left is forcefully trying to destroy Western culture, one wonders why, and just what they expect to gain from it. Maybe they are they all members of some secret mind cult, espousing the same left-speak as they hear others speak. One thing for sure, lefties don’t think, they just emote. When something “feels” right then it must be right. Damn the evidence.

“you might think that it was impossible that different groups are simply better at different things.”

Yes, on the 1 hand, but also that it’s impossible that different groups would have DIFFERENT INTERESTS!

Women as a group just don’t dig math and science. ASME and I’m sure others have their panties in such a wad that there aren’t “enough women engineers”.

I AM a female engineer and pretty damn good. And I’ve know others both in class and at work. However, most women just aren’t interested in it. So what?

Does that mean we must put a gun to their heads and insist they WILL go into this/that endeavor because we MUST have quotas filled?

How’s that for the other side of this issue? Is that what libs will do next?

I’d bet that’s exactly what libs would like to do.

Your different interests comment is an excellent point but libs don’t seem to comprehend it, but then they don’t comprehend much in regards to common sense.

I keep waiting for leftist outrage about the obvious discrimination against whites and asians in the NBA. [crickets]

Yes, there are some, but FAR below their share of the population. The only possible explanation is that the greedy owner for some reason have an irrational affinity for black people. If they were color blind the league would mirror society as a whole.

I actually think that every time someone complains about workplace racial discrimination, they should immediately be asked about this, and why they’ve never protested it in any of the same ways.

That one fact alone regarding basketball shoots down the mindset of leftists but like you say, it’s seldom mentioned.

Of course libs want it “their” way no matter what the facts are.

“I keep waiting for leftist outrage about the obvious discrimination against whites and Asians in the NBA.”

Worse than that is the way beautiful women discriminate against poor, ugly men.

Beautiful women should have a quota of dates they have to go on with those oppressed, downtrodden souls.
