Sowell: The Mindset of the Left
Creators Syndicate ^ | July 2, 2013 | Thomas Sowell

When teenage thugs are called "troubled youth" by people on the political left, that tells us more about the mindset of the left than about these young hoodlums.

Seldom is there a speck of evidence that the thugs are troubled, and often there is ample evidence that they are in fact enjoying themselves, as they create trouble and dangers for others.

Why then the built-in excuse, when juvenile hoodlums are called "troubled youth" and mass murderers are just assumed to be "insane"?

At least as far back as the 18th century, the left has struggled to avoid facing the plain fact of evil — that some people simply choose to do things that they know to be wrong when they do them. Every kind of excuse, from poverty to an unhappy childhood, is used by the left to explain and excuse evil.

All the people who have come out of poverty or unhappy childhoods, or both, and become decent and productive human beings, are ignored. So are the evils committed by people raised in wealth and privilege, including kings, conquerors and slaveowners.

Why has evil been such a hard concept for many on the left to accept? The basic agenda of the left is to change external conditions. But what if the problem is internal? What if the real problem is the cussedness of human beings?

Rousseau denied this in the 18th century and the left has been denying it ever since. Why? Self preservation.

If the things that the left wants to control — institutions and government policy — are not the most important factors in the world's problems, then what role is there for the left?

. . . making decent, law-abiding people more vulnerable to evil people.

Pretty much sums up the left's entire reason for existence . . .

From my own experience with family yesterday.

My uncle had to keep an eye on his 17 year old sexually confused son while he went swimming and my brother in law droning on about the destruction republicans have wrought upon Detroit.

He knows the answer. He gave the non-religious answer in “Conflict of Visions”,

and the real answer is found in Genesis 3.

The humanist worldview is the problem, and it began with the words “you will be as gods knowing good and evil”.

How did the Republicans do that? The Republicans haven’t had control of Detroit for I don’t know how many decades.

The republicans must have destroyed Detroit by abandoning it to the democrats...

Yep, the older I get the more I really believe liberalism is a mental disorder.

The left has an unquenchable craving to be in control. No solution is good enough for them unless it puts them in charge. If there is no crisis, they will invent one.

He didn't have an answer. He's chosen his reality and he's sticking to it come hell or high water. Keep in mind that this is a very intelligent 6 figure earner who works right in downtown Detroit. He didn't even know about the disappearance and criminal investigation of city council president Charles Pugh.

My militant lesbian cousin is starting to make the garden variety liberals seem sane and she’s mad that the family wouldn’t come to her 3 AM wedding in Minneapolis.

The mindset of the left is that production of the individual is the property of the collective (i.e. community) instead of the property of the producer. The elites will determine how to manage and distribute the collective property because they have superior intellect. Of course, they will choose to keep a disproportionate share of the collective property because of the effort required. In reality they produce nothing while sharing in the production of others by seizing it in the name of the collective.

Contrast with the natural state of man. In nature, a man hunts, fishes, or farms for food. If he fails to grow or find food (i.e. produce) he starves. As society advanced, a man could produce tools and other material things desired by other men. The producers of tools, weapons, buildings, and other non food goods would receive food (or its equivalent value in money to be exchanged for food) from the producers of food. For those producing non food items, they ate if the items had value in the marketplace and they starved if the items were not valued by other producers. The individual who chose not to produce anything starved.

The natural order of things was Darwinian in nature. The producers thrived and the non producers starved. The best producers earned more than the other producers and the marginal producers were motivated by fear of starvation to keep producing.

Today liberals have removed the fear of starvation. As a result the non-producers instead of starving and dying are procreating at a faster rate than the producers.

Liberals profess to love nature more than humanity. Should we not then give the non producers the natural choice? Produce and live or don’t produce and die.
