A saxophone player has claimed that she was assaulted as she played a jazz song in the street by three African American women who said a white girl shouldn't play that sort of music.

Cassandra Struve, 26, was performing in the street outside the Summerfest grounds in Milwaukee, Wisconsin around 11pm on June 26 when the three women approached her.

'I was playing Minnie the Moocher, classic Blues Brothers song,' Struve told WITI. 'A lady with a child in her hand came up to me, smacked me in my face and said, "Don’t play that".'

They added that a white girl could not play the song, she said.

After she was hit, she said she was 'instantly upset' and broke down in tears.

The 1930s belonged to popular swing big bands, in which some virtuoso soloists became as famous as the band leaders. Key figures in developing the “big” jazz band included bandleaders and arrangers Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson, Earl Hines, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw.

There may be a white boy in there some where!

Yep. I almost got to play with Cab Calloway once, in Savannah. But they only needed 2 saxophones, not 3. I did get to shake his hand and chat for a while.

truly unbelievable....like a young version of one of the great unheralded blues singers of the last half-century,
the great Tracy Nelson.

This is vile.

Music brought the races together in the 50’s & 60’s.

These women are trying to bring us back to the Jim Crow days...

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has a good version of it too. BBVD is an all white band.

Bix, Benny, Bunny, Tommy, Jimmy, Gene, Harry, etc. would be disappointed.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy also has an album dedicated to Cab Calloway covers.

Funny thing, about half of Calloway’s band is white.

Yes, they were the first to record, but not the creators. I agree that jazz is descended from European classical music.

'instantly upset' and broke down in tears.

..instead of reporting the incident and pressing charges. Where are you performing next? Acorn?

He was dressed sharp the night I met him. Had to be in his 80s. Hell of a showman.

Cab Calloway would no doubt be pleased that his music caught on with a young white lady, and upset about a black woman’s violent reaction to the tribute.

Minnie the Moocher was written by Harold Arlen, a white guy. Here’s a 1931 recording by Cab Calloway: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~ug03/Jukebox/popups/minnie.html
