Protestors rally near NSA data center for 4th Amendment rights

BLUFFDALE — More than 100 people gathered Thursday at Utah Veterans Memorial Park to support the cause of Restore the Fourth, a national group demanding an end to what its members say is unconstitutional government surveillance.

Dan Garfield, a Saratoga Springs resident and Restore the Fourth supporter, said he believes the rally for Fourth Amendment rights was fitting for the Fourth of July because veterans have fought and died to maintain American rights.

"We feel like the government has overstepped its bounds and gone contrary to what the Fourth Amendment stands for," he said.

Garfield said the rally was initially intended to take place near the access road of the new Utah Data Center, the 1 million-square-foot, $1.2 billion facility scheduled to open this fall at Camp Williams. The data center is overseen by the National Security Agency, which issued a statement saying the facility will "strengthen and protect the nation's cyber-security."

The Fourth Amendment guards against "unreasonable searches and seizures." Concluding what is reasonable is at the center of the national debate over the NSA's data seizure and analysis.

I saw this monstrous facility for the first time today. It looks like a futuristic holding tank for human experimentation. Really, it's a hell hole. The thing is HUGE and the police were there to protect THEM from US! We are paying for this complex! OMG - what is going on with our country? BTW there were more than 100 of us!

When you consider they put these protests together in about 5 days, it’s pretty much a miracle how well it turned out. I am proud to have been there.

I know someone who was fairly close to that place recently. He said he could feel “very bad vibes” coming from the place. He said it was a creepy experience.

I just heard a little about it on Glenn Beck’s show. He said it has a helicopter landing area - that is underground. Huge doors open up, the copper goes down into the ground. (I’m thinking Air-Wolf and the hollow mountain!).

I guess the facility is HUGE on the surface, and who knows how many floors deep it is.

Near us there is a small, local power company building that has the transformer yard, control building and office space. They upgraded it recently. Lots of dump trucks coming and going - but everything still looks the same! A neighbor said his company bid on the job but lost. They extended the facility something like 4 more stories below ground. Oh - and the higher fence and double gate at the front is new.

It’s high up on a hill but yet not quite visible. It’s like a hideous structure and you can only see the tops of the buildings. It looks like a complex - no real windows. It’s like impregnable bunkers. Really scary stuff!!! And to think, we are paying for that monstrosity so they can spy on us!

After the speeches (some great, some boring), we marched to the NSA area but of course, the police would not let us enter the gates so we tied red white and blue ribbons on the fence. Surprised the fence was not electrified!

Thank you for your post. Wish you could have been there with us today. We got a lot of support from passing traffic. The organizers said they are already working on the next protest. This time, there was only about 5 days’ advance notice - not really enough time to get the word out. Next time, there will be more of us. We need thousands!! This NSA facility is GROUND ZERO.

Some people were blaming UT Governor for promoting Utah as a great place to build this crapper!!

Some of the speakers were “educating” us on the horrors of this facility while others just wanted to vent. Any way you look at it, it was a good day for freedom of speech and right of assembly.

But it will take a lot more activism and anger. A few talked about civil disobedience - I mean, since our legislators are so darn IGNORANT and CORRUPT, looks like it’s up to us to sacrifice our time and resources to at least let them know WE ARE MAD AS HELL AND WE WILL VOTE THE BUMS OUT WHO SUPPORT THIS NIGHTMARE!

Actually, the police presence was huge but overall they were polite. Just made it clear that we were not allowed on the property itself. We chanted, “Hey hey ho ho, the NSA has got to go!” And “NSA go away!” Stuff like that.

It was a mix of protesters. Some left at the beginning because some of the speeches were so dang boring! Preaching to the choir. I liked it best when the every-day folk got to vent over the microphone.

Okay, so it was a little unorganized and unprofessional but isn’t that what makes America great? Just every day people getting together to protest an assault on our rights.

Proud to be an American!!

You can only see the tops of some of the buildings. It’s still under construction but looks to be almost finished. You’d have to drive quite a ways from the gate to the facility itself on a long long driveway.

P.S. There’s a military base across the street!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed.

All our political problems can be corrected through the political process providing the voters exercise the necessary discipline. It’s not an exciting proposition, but it’s the plain truth.
