Fending off a flurry of direct questions, officials at the White House and State Department on Monday refused to characterize last week's events in Egypt as a military coup.
Though officials did not dispute the fact that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, a democratically-elected leader, was ousted by the military in an extrajudicial fashion, they would not say the word "coup," which has an important legal consequence for the $1.5 billion in aid Congress sends to Egypt every year.
"[We are] taking the time to determine what happened, what to label it," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters.
"We're just not taking a position," said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
The Oxford English Dictionary describes a "coup d'etat" as an "illegal seizure of power from a government," which most legal observers agree matches the events that unfolded in Egypt. Though few think the ruling Muslim Brotherhood governed in an inclusive fashion during its one-year in power, and many decried Morsy's authoritarian power grabs over parliament and the judiciary, reporters pushed officials to call a spade a spade.

it’s just a “kinetic regime change”!
All I know is that I do not trust/believe one word uttered by the Muslim Brotherhood nor do I trust/believe one word coming from the Obama administration. Not one word!!
That's rassiss.
“Fending off a flurry of direct questions, officials at the White House and State Department on Monday refused to characterize last week’s events in Egypt as a military coup.”
This is all about Foreign Military Sales (FMS). That’s money we allot for foreign militaries to spend at US companies. I believe that General Dynamics is the biggest benefactor in Egypt. They’ve sold Egypt some 1500 Abrams tanks. Obama has given them 200 more. There’s 1.3 billion dollars for maintaining them. GDLS supplies the assemblies and that company is on the verge of going out of business.
You can bet that GD has pulled out the stops and donated lots of money to the senators and Obama’s ongoing campaign effort.
No one in the Washington elite will admit it but Obama is incredibly ignorant and can’t pronounce or understand many common words. Obama also can’t speak coherently without a teleprompter.
***they would not say the word “coup,” which has an important legal consequence for the $1.5 billion in aid Congress sends to Egypt every year.***
The news report I heard Carney say that “it’s not in our best interest” to label it a coup. Slight difference but it says to me financing terrorism is a high priority and no need to let a technicality get in the way.
You say that as if there is a difference between them.
I agree.
It would be foolish, though, to call the Egyptian military coup a "coup" if the result is ending American aid. That would only throw them right back into the hands of the Islamists. The economy's a basket-case; the sensible side needs help.
Lincoln cracked the Constitutional dam when he denied Habeus Corpus during the Civil War/War of Northern Aggression. It has been leaking steadily ever since and now has become a raging torrent of abused rhetoric. Obama does as he pleases and the Congress does nothing except seek more money for their own reelections in order to draw fancy salaries and bennies. Habemus Dictator!
Workplace violence.
It wasn’t a coup — the overthrow of Mubarak was a coup. Zero and his fellow incompetents at the off-white house simply have no other options, and finally faced up to that.
zero wouldn’t say shitte if he had a mouthfull.....
