Found something—haven’t read yet:
Arco, Idaho: Devil Boat - Submarine In The Desert
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/10226
I don’t know that area well.
I have only been to Washington once and never to Idaho or Oregon.
So now we know!:
Devil Boat - Submarine In The Desert
On Hwy 20/26 in Arco, ID is the conning tower of the fast-attack nuclear submarine USS Hawkbill (SSN-666), aka “The Devil Boat.” A local told me that “The Submarine In The Desert” was installed in July 2003 to show their support of the armed forces and because of the town’s long association with the Navy and the nuclear fleet.
Aww...went to a few games to watch my boys play 6-man football vs. Ten Sleep. It was quite a drive from Gallatin County, MT, but always fun. Good times.
Way north of Arco but Pend Oreille and Coeur d’Alene well worth the trip. Silverwood amusement park for kids (and “young at any age”).
It just seems so odd.
Arco Idaho? LOL
I know. Not seeing the Navy connection...lol. Idaho and potatoes, yes. Idaho and Navy, no.
Cool.
This is one of the first Nukes.
first Sub to circumnavigate the globe submerged.
Well that'll save me money...After I spend the 500 dollars in gas to get there...
Gnight and thanks for the chin wag.
Ah, thanks for sharing. How far is Gallatin? Wow, I gotta look up all these places now. Gallatin County, MT, Arco, ID. Ten Sleep, WY. Lake Pend Oreille, ID. Making me want to get on the road!
You too! Have a good one. :)
The Triton sail park is located a few hundred yards from where they dock the barges that bring decommissioned sub reactors up the Columbia River to Hanford (and about two miles from my house).
Thanks for the info. Will look up that amusement park. Would love to see more of ID and MT. So much beauty and interesting places in this country. LOVE my country.
The conning tower is preserved and open to the public?
Sounds like a cool place to visit.
Yeah...one of the parks I’ve been wanting to see.
