Away from the troublespots, life for millions of Egyptians continues as normal. Egypt's most fundamental problems are more economic than political.
But in a week when the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood called for "an uprising by the great people of Egypt against those trying to steal their revolution with tanks", when dozens were killed in clashes between the army and Islamists and when the grand sheikh of al-Azhar warned of a civil war, an awkward question hovers in the air.
Is Egypt now prone to a new "holy war" fought by Islamists against the authorities?

I think a “Holy War” would be the way to get this thing straightened out. Algeria had a similar situation years ago and their Army crushed the Muslim attempt to take over the Government. A similar war in Egypt might wipe out the “Brotherhood” for good.
When Mubarak was overthrown, Obama rushed out, gave a speech, in which he praised these Arab spring revolutions, and how freedom and democracy was coming to Egypt now, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Obama was fundamentally wrong about what is happening in that part of the world. These countries are NOT overthrowing dictators and then moving on to western style parliamentary democracy. Obama in his liberal naivete, or his lack of knowledge of history and world affairs, is clueless about things.
We don’t know what is going to happen in Egypt, Libya, Syria, etc. and that’s the whole point. We fear that Muslim extremists will take over these countries. Perhaps Obama doesn’t fear that, but many of us do. But for Obama to say that freedom and democracy is coming to the Arab/Muslim world due to these revolutions is absurd.
It Islam is involved, there is most definitely nothing “holy” about it.

Normally, I’m not in favor of choosing sides in middle eastern countries, but in this case (while I do not want to see any ‘overt’ American involvement - which btw, would actually be detrimental to the objective), I do think that the battle about to be waged in Egypt will be one that will have huge and significant consequences for the west and for generations to come, and this would require the U.S. and the west to align themselves in full support of those trying to prevent an ‘Islamic’ theocratic government from taking over (i.e. the ‘Bros).
More than half of all Egyptians DO NOT (I repeat) DO NOT want to see any radical Islamic government taking over in Egypt. The coming civil war, if there is one, is going to be about this, and solely this.
We don’t want Americans parachuting in there, but we do want to see victory by those who do not want Islamic fundamentalism taking over.

We didn’t pull aid when Morsi was openly referring to us as his enemies. Pulling aid now would just be proving our support for the brotherhood to the Egyptian people. Unlike Syria we have a dog in this fight. The Egyptian Army has shown that they prioritize the welfare of their country over their own political gain and they are the only ones with a shot a returning Egypt to a somewhat stable, not actively anti West, government. They don’t need any more F-16s they DON’T need US troops but if they need some money for bullets, we should give it to them.
Or here’s a better idea: Tell DHS to give the 2700 APCs and 1.9 billion rounds of ammunition that they have been quietly stocking up to the Egyptian Army. That should help.
The mideast would be virtually no different if it were completely populated and under the control of the American left and it would be pretty indistinguishable from what it is today.
You probably wouldn’t have muslims but you would have paganism of some sort and a campaign of extermination against Christians and Jews. (and anyone else who opposed them)
Islam has created a great ignorant ghetto of Egypt. The majority cannot read, over 90% of the women have been mutilated, they have very little science, technology or innovation. You’ve got tens of millions of people existing very much as though they are monkeys.
Combine that with the fact that their food supply is day to day, you’ve got a fragile situation.

This is exactly right.
It is always tempting to see things in black-and-white terms: The Good Guys versus The Bad Guys; The Forces of Democracy versus The Forces of Oppression--but it is entirely possible for both sides to be not-so-good.
President Obama's touting of "the Arab Spring"--and his tut-tutting as regarding the dictators that were overthrown--appears to overlook this simple fact...
No he's not. In that time of life when one goes to school to learn world history, Zero was in Indonesia. Guess what brand of "history" he studied?
You can bet that he learned more about the Meddle East than most any Western educated student.

I disagree that Obama is clueless- he is PART OF the muslim brotherhood, and knew exactly what he was doing (or at least the puppet masters controlling him did.)
Then again, he himself may be too stupid to know what he is doing (so your point would be valid).
Either way, the result it the same- he is enabling the muslim takeover to institute a caliphate

That was always my opinion about the situation in former Yugoslavia. The Serbians were no saints, but neither were their enemies.
Yes, I recall his state of the union address calling Islam a religion of peace. I turned off the TV right there and then.
I think the “War to Defend Against Islam” will happen when non-mooselimbs finally stand up to the mooselimbs. The only thing preventing this “Holy War” is non-mooselimbs always giving in to them.
