And in related news, Obamas to return to Martha's Vineyard this summer

I know there are a whole lot of slugs working as DOD civilians, but I've also worked with some outstanding folks. It sure would be nice if the civil service system would allow them to dump the slugs...

No, I'm not holding my breath.

Quotes in this article show a childish disconnect with the real world amongst civilian employees. It’s highlighted by a tremendously inflated sense of self, whining, and blame shifting.

A lady who is a Civilian Paramedic got 3 calls with the volunteer rescue squad yesterday she would have missed if she hadn’t been sequestered.

It was nice having her ,but the sequestration is BS, especially when the White House Vacationer is spending millions flying all over the world making an ass of himself.

I recently worked as a contractor at an army base. The level of dysfunction was something that I'd never encountered before. It all boiled down to a few rotten apples running wild.

I finally understood why so much of our evaluations were based on playing well with others. A few un-fireable psychos can ruin an operation.

Oh yeah, and the ones I saw were women and minorities. I was there long enough to see them get promoted out.

The problem with your desire is that a lot of the “slugs” in DoD would be the ones making the decisions who to hire and fire for being “slugs.”

Gov cannot have furloughs year after year. Those DoD workers be ready for an offer to retire in coming fall/winter, because a reduction in force is coming in 2014 if not enough people take early retirement. Since Congress is evenly divided, and a looming fiscal crisis threaten our nation via huge debt and dollar printing, action has to be taken. If Congress is unwilling to take cuts and allow others no cuts, then across the board cuts is the next best thing.
All thinking Fed workers should have saw this coming and adjust their personal finances accordingly. The age of austerity is upon the gov. If they think it is tough now, they haven’t seen anything yet.

Claim to be a pig farmer and that you were discriminated against by the federal government. That’s worth $50,000. Claim to be a homosexual and receive an ambassador posting. Look at how Obama has been fighting for the DOD employees......hahahahahahahahahahahaha! No....seriously......he really cares about them.......hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

"Congress wouldn’t win any popularity contests among the furloughed."

Then neither should the "Commander-in-Chief", whose idea the sequester was. Not like that would ever be reported, or anything.

I don't care anymore. Fire them all. In this case a LOT of bad apples spoiled the whole bunch.

Talked to the coach of my 8 year old son - he's FBI and his wife is an armed IRS agent. WTF do IRS agents need to be armed for? He was whining about her being furloughed one day a week. Get over it.

Saw 15 Amtrak workers watching ONE guy cut a railroad tie one day. Fire them all!

I am sick to death of these petty, spoiled, whining brats complain about a day off without pay. Every day I go to bed wondering if my company, due to the taxes that these people confiscate, the regulations they impose and enforce, the bloat they suck out of the economy and the general overall incompetence they engender in their "jobs".

They can all go to hell. State employees, Federal employees are nothing but a bunch of damn leeches. I don't care if they perform a "needed service". Even the newest private company could do it better cheaper.

God, I am so tired of waiting for the next shoe, on this millipede of federal government, to drop down on my life and the lives of my sons. I have ZERO sympathy for these teat sucking pods.

If anyone bothers to try to argue against my rant - forget it.

How does 11 days off equate to 20 % of their income. Maybe they only work 55 days a year. They must be using that new Nancypelosi math.

So this is all it is - - extra vacation days?? I thought the sequestration cuts would lead to full, outright firings of hundreds of thousands of people. You mean, nobody is losing their jobs, the way those of us in the private sector who have to deal with economic reality lose our jobs?

"Hines said she’s worried about broader effects of furloughs. “What kind of signal are we sending to our adversaries when we’re having to furlough our civilians, when we’re not doing training or TDYs?”

How about the stupidity of sending billions to, dirtbag tin horn dictators in sh!thole countries that hate the freedoms we used to enjoy.

Congress is the problem, "we the people" are the solution.

hold these assclowns in DC accountable

Instead of attacking each other, we should be more proactive in holding our elected officials accountable.

Nobody said life would be fair, and if there's one thing the government knows is how to screw people over.

What we need to do is to join together and hold these idiots in DC accountable, however that's accomplished.

I get a retirement from the military as an E6, which is not much, but it's something. I do not expect it to be there for much longer because of the criminal activity of Congress. Do they owe me a job, hell no, do they only my pension hell yes!

Do you see them taking a pay cut for sequestration, hell no! Do you see them changing retirement for military, they've already done that you have to wait till 62 now to draw your pension. When we all wake up and realize that we have a ruling class, and not elected body then maybe the shit will change.

Most of this is just politics. Proper cuts (which are not really cuts) can be made without hurting the necessary functions of government.

This caught my eye: “Maybe I’ll go back to school and get my masters in something.”

“My masters in something . . .” That sounds just like a government plan. “My masters”??? Just like it is an entitlement just waiting for him to go out and claim it. I have no idea who this guy is or how effective he might be, but this single, ridiculous statement makes me think he may be a slug . . . .

“. . . in something . . .” Something???? What a joke.

I spent plenty of time in military service. I know that in my time there were many DoD civilians who were effective and dedicated. I also had to deal with more than a few slugs who were just leaving a trail of slim. Yet the slugs could not be removed. They were virtually immune to firing. What was galling, often the slugs had to be appeased, humored, obeyed and praised in order to get something done, not because of their effectiveness, but because of their ability to gum up the works.

To simply furlough a slug for a day a week is a huge improvement over what I saw in my military career. If the non-slugs also suffer . . . well then they may be slower to hire slugs, and may be quicker to push for changes in the so-called civil service laws and rules which will make it easy to get rid of slugs.
