Hostess Brands Returns to Snack Cake Market, Will Not Hire the Professional Bakers
AFL-CIO ^ | 7/12/2013 | Jackie Tortora

Posted on 07/13/2013 4:55:38 PM PDT by mdittmar

Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) President David B. Durkee issued the following statement in response to the impending re-entry by Hostess Brands, LLC, into the snack cake market:

“This coming week, Hostess Brands, LLC, is expected to re-enter the wholesale snack cake market.  Despite the fanfare, the long-term viability of this effort is highly uncertain. Rather than hire professional, experienced bakers who have produced quality snack cakes in the company’s bakeries for decades, Hostess management has chosen instead to hire primarily workers with little or no experience in the demanding wholesale snack cake baking industry.

“The BCTGM has consistently stated our interest in working cooperatively and productively with the new owners of this company.  We have always maintained that the experience, skill and professionalism of our members offer the new owners, who have no experience in the wholesale snack cake business, the best chance for long-term success in consistently putting out a quality product.

Since all their goodies tasted like they had been produced by robots in a chemistry lab why should anyone care whether the new company hires “professional bakers”?

Flame away twinkie lovers.

My play on words seems to have missed the target.

However, I wonder if the Keebler Elves are in a union.

Well AFL-CIO, the market will tell soon enough whether it takes a union employees to make Twinkies. Although you may dislike it, the final arbiter is always the consumer.

I know that products made in the same bakery, going to the same delivery
point had to be delivered by two different union trucks. I don’t know how
much the bakers made or their benefits. However, if money is saved by
changing the delivery system, maybe the cost of these products will be
lower.

The Teamsters, as I recall, were the only union that was willing to compromise. I believe I read a statement they put out urging the bakers’ union to go back to the bargaining table and work something out. The bakers didn’t and everyone there lost. Goods still have to be delivered to stores but I don’t know if those are Teamster represented drivers or not. I thought I read that the new owner was subcontracting a lot out. Who knows if the drivers are represented...but if they aren’t, I’d be leery of driving a truck with Hostess written on the side of it.

The unions bankrupted a company and then demands they hire them back. Yeah, that’s going to happen.

Hostess-IBC...

Yet ANOTHER in the long line of American companies destroyed by an activist, political union.

But, you can’t say that, because you might be one of those “CRAZY!!” people. It doesn’t fit the pre-approved narrative.

“I bought a box of Twinkies at the supermarket this morning. They taste so much better now without the union stain.”

I bought a box today too. I’m not really that into this; I’m more of a meat and potatoes guy, but I wanted to see if they were as good as I remembered them being last time I had one or if it was some other snack cake with the same name and logos. I have to say, they’re as good as they’ve ever been.
