Zimmerman Trial: How IA is different from FL' - SYG & its implications discussed throughout trial
The Cedar Rapids Gazette ^ | July 15, 2013 | Brady Smith

The criminal trial of George Zimmerman ended with a jury finding him not guilty in the death of Trayvon Martin. Throughout the trial, “stand your ground” was mentioned several times. While the rules of “stand your ground” vary state-to-state, this particular law allows deadly force in self-defense situations.

According to Cedar Rapids attorney Sara Riley, Iowa does not currently have a “stand your ground” law.

Riley said so-called this type of law allows citizens in some states to take deadly action toward anyone they deem a threat.

“If somebody hits you, and you’re fearful of your life, you could kill them,” she explained.

Rules in that law require authorities to have evidence against a person’s claim of self-defense, if they use deadly force against an attacker. That’s why Zimmerman wasn’t arrested the night he shot Trayvon Martin....

There’s no self defense in Iowa?

There’s no common sense in Iowa either....the damned stand your ground was NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT part of the defense of Zimmerman.

So in Iowa do you defend yourself with over feeding your aggressor GMO corn? The Zimmerman defense had nothing to do with “Stand your ground”. I guess in Iowa you just die because someone wants to kill you? Note to self, “Iowa sucks.”

yes yes yes I agree. I am so tired of “stand your ground” being brought up. It was not a factor.

Stand Your Ground should not even be mentioned in the same sentence with George Zimmerman.

Sara Riley:

Liberal uninformed liar.

Stand your ground as mentioned above had nothing to do with the Zimmerman case.

But to her stupid remarks: Stand your ground does not allow you to whack anyone just because they hit you. First, you must have a solid reason for defending yourself. All stand your ground laws do, in almost all jurisdictions, is clarify where self defence is legal. In most cases which I have read, it only codifies what has been in practice. One has always been able to defend oneself in the home, car, office, etc., but the stand your ground law makes it clear that some eager beaver DA will not rake you over like those that abused Zimmerman.

Zimmerman’s lawyers were smart. They did not choose to muddy the water with stand your ground when they had such a solid case based on the facts of self defence.

Except for eliminating the need to run out the back door of your own home, stand your ground really changes nothing other than making more difficult for a Nyfong type DA.

A responsible editor would never allow this to be printed in his or her newspaper. It is based on a false premise—there was no “stand your ground” law involved. Then it drifts off into nonsensical “what if”.

again the case isn’t about syg, it’s about self defense..

would be nice if msm would at least try to get one fact straight.

Obviously it is not!/SARCASM

After all, with a codified SYG law on the books of those states that have it, simple self-defense is also presumed to be a “right”, and arresting any citizen who lethally defended themselves from an attack is no longer the automatic reaction of LEOs.

It cuts out multiple millions of billable legal hours for lawyers, if prosecuters must provide reasonable evidence against the accused, before they destroy the lives of we citizens.

While SYG was not the legal issue in the Zimmerman/Martin case, simple self defense was.

And the travesty of justice was that Zimmerman was charged with murder for defending himself, based solely on media manipulations, political games and special interest group pressures.

Any one of us can be the next case.

The only good thing to come out of Iowa is I-80 West-—heading into Nebraska!! This from a man who has lived in Iowa for 30 years, albeit just across the river from Omaha. Western Iowa is red, but we are out-numbered by the leftist s__t-for-brains of des moans and eastern half of state. Tom Effing Harkin? One of the worst of the worst. He could be caught starring in pedophile snuff films and not have to campaign much to be reelected. Huskers are proud of their farm and ranching roots, but far too many iowegians would piss their panties if some pinko from either coast called them hicks. Western third of iowa should secede and become part of Nebrska along with Northern Colorado. Remember the asshat des moans register writer that wanted to see US gun owners slaughtered? Real classy commie rag the register. Awesome group Iowa Gun Owners is fighting for castle doctrine and SYG, but effing dm and eastern iowa shoot it down every year. We can’t have any Class 3 weapons here either. Eff these morons!

You are correct about Iowa. It has always been a liberal democrat/RINO "progressive-regressive" run state. Politicians like Steve King now, and HR Gross in the past are few and far between.

To make my point about how dead conservatism is in this state, look at the quarterly Freepathon donation scoreboards. I consider this site to be the premier conservative message board on the internet, and a good scale of showing conservative support in each state. Every Freepathon, if you look at the states' contributions, Iowa is always at or near the very bottom of contributions. There have been quarters where if I didn't contribute, Iowans would have given $0 to this site. Iowa is not a big state, but it is by far not the smallest either. Some quarters, Honduras gives more money than Iowans do. I think this board goes to show how dead conservative philosophy is in Iowa.

SYG is being pesented as the problem by Holder and 0bama. So MSM is following in lock step. Self defense,(which we all know is what got Zimmerman rightly declared innocent), is hard to attack so SYG is their boogie man.

Every state has it’s pros and cons. Only the balance varies. Sadly, too many states have a bad balance.
