Student gets prison for rigged election

Cal State San Marcos junior stole passwords to vote for himself

SAN DIEGO — A former Cal State San Marcos student who rigged a campus election by stealing nearly 750 student passwords to cast votes for himself and friends was sentenced Monday in federal court to a year in prison. It was Matthew Weaver’s decision to try to cover up the largest student identity theft in the university’s 24-year history that seemed to irritate the judge the most. “That’s the phenomenal misjudgment I can’t get around,” said Judge Larry Burns, who rejected Weaver’s request for probation. Burns said the election rigging was a serious offense but “kind of juvenile.” Developing a scheme to deflect blame after he had been caught made it worse. “He’s on fire for this crime, and then he pours gasoline on it to try to cover it up,” the judge said. Weaver, 22, of Huntington Beach was a third-year business student when he carried out the elaborate plan to win election as president of the school’s student council in March 2012. He pleaded guilty this year to three federal charges, including wire fraud and unauthorized access to a computer. During his sentencing hearing Monday, Weaver apologized, saying his behavior was “childish, foolish and arrogant.” He also said he “learned a very hard lesson.” Defense attorney John Kirby told Burns the motivation to steal the election was a “juvenile sense of push-back against a (student) council he didn’t think was being run appropriately.”

Why couldn’t this scam be perpetrated in any state that allows computer voting — such as Oregon? A fraudster could install key loggers on library and computer cafe computers.

Wait until all your banking , tax , and medical information is avialble online with " ObamaCure " !
With all that information available , don't you think that would be tempting to a 'hacker" ?
How about electronic elections ?

Don't worry , the government has your back!
BBrahhaahahaha !

It could be worth some money on a resume.

He probably won’t serve a full year.

Walmart holds elections every single day, you can even look at what you voted for on your receipt when you leave and correct it if it’s wrong. And they count the votes correctly every single night.

We only have rigged elections because we allow it.

The judge was right here

He stole the election and could have gotten off with it being a childish prank (like Captain Kirk rigging the ‘no win’ test at starfleet command, only stupider)

but then he created false facebook aqccounts in other students names and made up conversations where they plnned to frame him... that was 100 times worse

He is lucky I was not the judge- one year would not nearly be enough

minumum 10 years probation too

The democrat party will be after him with job offers, though

A year in prison over student election? Am I the only one who thinks that is a little harsh?

It’s always the cover up. The harsh sentence is because he crated fake Facebook personas and had those fake folks post fake, congratulatory, comments about him.
