Senators edge away from showdown over Obama nominees

Senate leaders slowly stepped away from a major showdown over presidential nominees on Tuesday, as Republicans dropped their opposition to a key appointee and Democrats offered a significant concession in return -- the withdrawal of two controversial labor board picks.

By Tuesday afternoon, lawmakers were describing the arrangement as a tentative "deal" that could avert an ugly stand-off. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid earlier had demanded that Republicans advance and approve at least seven nominees or face a controversial rule change that could drain their power. But Reid confirmed late Tuesday that things were cooling down.

"We have a new start for this body, and I feel very comfortable with it," Reid said.

On the Republican end, several members of the GOP joined Democrats to advance, in a 71-29 vote, the nomination of Richard Cordray, Obama's pick for director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He was later approved in a 66-34 vote.

And to think that our Cuban senator from Florida doesn’t know what it is to be “Rolled”.

Way OT: Did that blonde on Bret Bair’s panel on Benghazi just mention the admin was considering DEFAULT? About two minutes ago?

The way I look at it - they were caught between a rock and a hard place - they certainly don’t want the nuclear option to be implemented. I just hope the DEMS lose their majority in 2014 and hear the last of the whiny, Harry Reid.

They are always between a rock and a hard place, even when they are not.

Whether the filibuster rule is changed or not changed, the appointments are made.

The things that are filibustered are passed in spite of being filibustered.

The republicans do not have even a single legislative victory over the democrats.

They are 0 for 106 trillion.

Their record really can’t get any worse at all.

.

A Tea Party Senator would ‘pink slip’ the lot of them and filibuster this blackmail to death.

We need a new party that voluntarily commits to term limits—one term in the senate and 2 terms in the house. They just have to say “No, no, no, no and no.”

The Republican leaders in the Senate and the House are all cowards.

Reid blackmailed Senate Republicans, and they gave into the threat.

Now, the Republicans will learn what happens when you pay off a blackmailer — the blackmailer always want more.

It isn’t the first time and probably won’t be the last that they roll over. I haven’t actually followed this too much, so I don’t have much to say until I read and comprehend it all.

"Their record really can’t get any worse at all."

Yes. It can. Watch, as in the coming weeks they betray us all by joining the canonization of "St. Skittles," and sign off on sweeping gun control legislation. The IRS and NSA has them by the short hairs. They will do as they're told

Yes, they will, I do agree.

And I must grant the point that 0 and 106 trillion and 2 is worse than 0 and 106 trillion.

I used to say that the GOP stands for nothing, but I was wrong about that too.

The GOP stands for the democrat agenda every single time.

“Senate leaders slowly stepped away from a major showdown over presidential nominees on Tuesday, as Republicans dropped their opposition to a key appointee and Democrats offered a significant concession in return — the withdrawal of two controversial labor board picks.”

The withdrawal of two controversial labor board picks WHO WERE ILLEGALLY APPOINTED AND WHOSE APPOINTMENT WAS FOUND UNCONSTITUTIONAL BY A COURT is significant? The Republicans got nothing and gave away everything.
