Rand Paul mocks Liz Cheney’s Senate bid ("I thought she was running in her home state of Virginia,”)

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul mocked Liz Cheney’s newly announced Senate campaign Tuesday, questioning her Wyoming residency in a barbed statement.

“When I heard Liz Cheney was running for Senate I wondered if she was running in her home state of Virginia,” Paul said.

Cheney declared this afternoon that she would run in Wyoming’s GOP primary against incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi.

Asked last week about the brewing matchup, Paul told POLITICO he viewed Enzi as a solid conservative.

Paul and Cheney stand at opposite poles of the conservative national security debate, with Cheney supporting a hawkish foreign policy and Paul openly questioning the value of American military action overseas, and advocating for cuts to the defense budget.

Liz and her husband bought a home in WY over a year ago.

In Jackson Hole, which is one of the richest counties not contiguous to DC. You think someone would have advised her to live somewhere a little less ritzy. I mean if you get to chose your hometown why not pick something more modest.

Liz would be great for Wyoming and the Senate.

Please take it in the well intended spirit it is asked. What proof do we have the Liz Cheney, a lawyer and DC insider, would be a conservative in the Senate? Does she have a history in business or elected office of living and voting for conservative principles? Or do we just have prepared statements and press releases? This all just has the feel of another next in line with name recognition groomed by the power brokers.

Well, these days all sorts of folks spend significant time in various States. Who’s to say what State one is a resident of if one should live for 4 months each in 3 States?

Jackson Hole, right! Lots of other celebrities own homes in Jackson Hole. It’s very, very chic.

Enzi is a perfectly fine conservative. No one said he’s perfect. Please DO show me the perfect elected conservative. Frankly, I’d rather see Enzi in the Senate for WY and Cheney in the Senate for VA.

True, but she's not fooling anyone. Well, almost anyone.

Well, her daddy who was living/working/voting in TX ran back to WY to change his voting registration when he decided he’d be a good running mate for “W,” didn’t he?

It’s a free country, and those wealthy enough to have homes in several states can decide which is their legal residence. Despite her WY roots, tho, this does make Ms. Cheney seem like a carpetbagger taking advantage of that strongly R state.

He didn't have a choice in that one, not unless they were willing to forego all of the Texas electoral votes.

Rand is quickly getting on my nerves with his snarkiness about Ms. Cheney. I guess he doesn’t want to share the spotlight on the right hand side of the stage.

It’s the first of many proxy battles between the neo-con Cheney wing of the GOPe and the upstart (small l) libertarian neo-Paulian challengers.

The point is that voting registrations can be quite fluid, depending on what works into one’s political convenience. I don’t want to get into attacking Liz Cheney but I really don’t like what she’s doing here. It reeks of opportunism, taking advantage of family connections without having a really strong personal connection from having lived in and been part of the state herself within recent memory. Has she ever lived in WY as an adult?

Dick Cheney & family, I thought, had deep roots in WY. I lived there for a while, and folks there seemed rather proud of the Cheney connection.

Here is a VIDEO that shows how much ol'Dick thought about the people of Wyoming. It features Cheney and his good pal David Rockefeller laughing it up about how Dick kept his Directorship of the America destroying Council on Foreign Relations secret from his rube constituents.

Other than the past few months? No. In fact I don't think she ever lived in Wyoming as a child.
