Under his watch, New York City has required food chains to post calorie counts, eliminated trans fats from restaurants and fought unsuccessfully to limit the size of a soda. Still, even as his days in office are numbered, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg continues his campaign against obesity, this time by urging New Yorkers to take the stairs.
Mr. Bloomberg said on Wednesday that he had issued an executive order requiring city agencies to promote the use of stairways and use smart design strategies for all new construction and major renovations. Mr. Bloomberg has also proposed two bills that would increase visibility and access to at least one staircase in all new buildings around the city. This would include putting up signs on the walls, especially near elevators, with one central injunction: take the stairs.
“I’m not here to tell you how to live,” Mr. Bloomberg said at a news conference, adding that New Yorkers live close to three years more than the national average and three years longer than they did a dozen years ago. “But we must be doing something right.” …

Everybody in NYC knows that staircases are so safe, especially at night.
but I would never pass a law that says you have to love my lifestyle. Which does include butter, eggs, meats, bacon and lots of veggies

Actually being borderline claustrophobic I have some sympathy here. I find that when i look for stairways rather than take the elevator they are often difficult to find. I do limit my climbs to no more than ten floors. But in many buildings in NYC and environs, particularly public govt bldgs and hospitals that the use of stairs is frowned on and I have to man up and pray the elevator doesn’t get stuck.
yup!..and the bums that live under the staircases at nite have never seen a soul or worried about their safety either
Yeah, I sort of see what you’re saying. I used to work in a NYC-owned building (at the time, it was 50/50, city agencies/private companies) that had no non-fire stairs. Our office was on the 2nd floor, and we still had to wait for the elevator every time. Made me feel lazy as h*ll, and many a client looked at us like we were crazy.

I understand he want’s to join the circus as a LITTLE clown.
It’s hard to imagine, but he’s not—and his likely successors are much worse.
How long before this light-in-his-loafers nitwit has to go back to peddling his worthless, spy terminals and ridiculous rag?
Maybe the government could charge a toll to take the elevator. You’d have to put a dollar in coins in the slot to make it work.
Of course, this is all about promoting health, so it’s justified.
