Noonan: A Bombshell in the IRS Scandal
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 19, 2013 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 07/19/2013 4:58:22 AM PDT by opentalk

The IRS scandal was connected this week not just to the Washington office—that had been established—but to the office of the chief counsel.

That is a bombshell—such a big one that it managed to emerge in spite of an unfocused, frequently off-point congressional hearing in which some members seemed to have accidentally woken up in the middle of a committee room, some seemed unaware of the implications of what their investigators had uncovered, one pretended that the investigation should end if IRS workers couldn't say the president had personally called and told them to harass his foes, and one seemed to be holding a filibuster on Pakistan.

Still, what landed was a bombshell. And Democrats know it. Which is why they are so desperate to make the investigation go away. They know, as Republicans do, that the chief counsel of the IRS is one of only two Obama political appointees in the entire agency.

… The IRS chief counsel is named William Wilkins. And again, he is one of only two Obama political appointees in the IRS.

I guess that’s, uh, one way to put it.

And for the people get their news from Jimmy Fallon, John Stewart, the babes on the View, Kelly Ripa, etc., this never happened.

That’s important, too. When the media is 99.9% in the tank for the administration, there’s no such thing as a “scandal.” Never happened.

Oh, look! A squirrel!

Now we know why Justice sent agitators to Florida. Stir up the pot. Make it seem that all whites are racists in the hopes the public will look the other way. It’s working. The media is doing their part to protect this administration. I don’t believe America is as interested in the Zimmerman case as Lieberals want us to be. All these people(Obama, Holder, Jarret, etc..) should rot in prison. I am so frustrated.

Well, Peggy. We may have crime and corruption in the Obama Administration, but at least we don’t have that horrible Sarah Palin as Vice President, right?

The other issue is this a huge political win for the Republicans. All the polls show that regardless of party, people are pissed off about this whole IRS scandal. Everyone hates the IRS and paying taxes.

Like all the Obama scandals NOTHING will come of this. The media is in the tank for Obama and the GOP leadership is too timid fearing that seriously pursuing anything against Obama will brand them as racist. Nixon was hounded out of office for trifles in comparison. Obama should be impeached for a dozen reasons, but NOTHING will come of it even if the GOP had majorities in both houses of Congress. I fear that Obama knows he can do almost anything with impunity and will bit by bit make himself dictator. November 6, 2012 may have been our last free presidential election.

Harry Reid had Mitt Romney’s tax returns!

You joke, but they are both Mormons. I'm sure they've had many conversations, one liberal to another.

"This is the moment things go forward or stall. Republicans need to find out how high the scandal went and why, exactly, it went there. To do that they'll have to up their game."

Memo to Boehner and Issa: As per the above quote at the end of her article, Peggy says "up yours".

“Is it really a “bombshell” if no one is surprised?”

Exactly! The real “bombshell” would be if something is actually done about it...and if the Obama administration was actually held accountable for this or for ANYthing they do or have done. (not holding my breath)

In his opening remarks yesterday, Issa went on, and on about how his committee was tirelessly working to get to the bottom of this (yeah right!). Later, Issa told Georgie the IG, "one month to get some requested info back to the committee would seem like a "flash" of time, since the House would be out for the entire month of August."

If others complain about how long it's taking the Republicrats to get to the bottom of this, they'll let it slip out, "its a secret plan we have for everything to come out just before November '14 elections."

How long has Issa been "tirelessly" working on fast-and-furious? IMO, It's past time to prune this deadwood from the house, senate, and this committee, if not already too late for America. Even on this very committee now, are much more capable and better experienced individuals for bringing these criminals to Justice. Issa should do what's right for the country, if he really cared about the country, and step down.

The biggest boobs, besides the woman constantly hanging her's over the chairman, are Issa and the "supreme minority leader" Cummings.

Sorry for being condescending. After watching these clowns for a few days, my distaste knows no bounds.

Peggy Noonan wouldn’t know a bombshell unless it went off right in front of her.

No, that 47 percent that pays no or little income tax thinks the IRS is as good as peach oatmeal.

Everybody, except the Republicans, sees this. lol

Reagan wrote the manual on how Republicans can win. Too bad they won’t read the book.

The truth is simple —Wilkins needs to go to Prison for a VERY LONG TIME.

He politicized the IRS and he’s a criminal.

What is unclear about this?

I agree with you. The Republican’s have no fight in them. They bluster a lot but never take any action. We are sunk as nation.

WELCOME TO THE LAND OF THE UN-ENTITLED.

Yes, and I’m as guilty as the next man of being fixated on the Zimmerman case. But that is because that case has journalism’s flank exposed, and that must not be ignored. The low-hanging fruit for Zimmerman is his suit against NBC which, having broadcast the NEN police call tape with an answer to one question, and a different question, snipped out, set itself up for a big-bucks libel suit. Settlement should be worth enough to put Zimmerman and his family and affected friends on easy street.

But that is not the real opportunity. Zimmerman’s lawyer should hit all of journalism - “the Associated Press and its members individually” is how I would phrase it - with a class action libel lawsuit with Zimmerman as lead plaintiff. White Republicans generally are “tarred” with “Zimmerman’s brush” - and Zimmerman is “tarred” with ours. All because of the named defendants. We should be able, collectively, to financially keep the suit afloat - and the torts which can be alleged, and the pockets we would be suing, are collectively deep and influential.

The dream is to no only hurt them financially but to wring a consent decree from the lot of them which would impose actual, rather than cosmetic, balance in their reporting. Something along the lines of requiring consistency in the naming of the race of perpetrators of crime, for example - such that if a community is disproportionately law-abiding, a single counterexample (the Zimmerman allegations) would not be used to “tar” the rest of the community. You call Zimmerman “white,” you limit your coverage of his alleged crime to 10% of what coverage you give to the ethnicities which do 90% (if that’s the number) of all such crime.

It won’t touch Obama. Nothing touches Obama. He is “black.”

One example where it really IS whiteys fault. Whitey too cowardly to do anything. Whitey afraid urban people with go ape shit if Zero is impeached or imprisoned.
