She smuggled out the children in suitcases, ambulances, coffins, sewer pipes, rucksacks and, on one occasion, even a tool box.
Those old enough to ask knew their saviour only by her codename "Jolanta". But she kept hidden a meticulous record of all their real names and new identities - created to protect the Jewish youngsters from the pursuing Nazis - so they might later be re-united with their families.
Her finest hour: Irena Sendler rescued thousands of Jewish children By any measure, Irena Sendler was one of the most remarkable and noble figures to have emerged from the horrors of World War II. But, until recently, her extraordinary compassion and heroism went largely unrecorded.
When the Germans finally caught her, the Roman Catholic social worker had managed to save 2,500 Jewish babies and toddlers from deportation to the concentration camps. She had spirited them out of the heavily-guarded Jewish ghetto in Warsaw, and hidden their identities in two glass jars buried under an apple tree in her neighbour's garden.

One aspect of Sendler few talk about, was briefly mentioned:
“But in postwar communist Poland her heroic deeds went unpublished and were even officially frowned upon by the regime, which was not sympathetic towards Jews.”
In fact, in 1968, when the Polish Soviet Puppet Communist government expelled most of Poland’s remaining Jews in an anti-Zionist campaign, Sendler told the authorities that she would once again shelter Jews from the authorities.
Anna Paquin played her in an HBO movie about 4 years ago.
Agreed.
I can’t believe they gave Al Gore the Nobel Prize over Irena Sendler.
She was up for a Nobel Peace Prize but they gave it Al Gore for all the lives he saved with his slide show. Bad Call on their part.
Thanks for posting this. How amazing! A very well written article too, which is nice, always.
Just wow.
Shades of Schindler’s “I could have done more.”
I wish I could do for others even a tiny fraction of what she did.
Risking her life again and again.... this is the sort of courage that the Medal of Honor is awarded for. The Nobel peace prize is now just so much crap....awarded to monsters such as Arafat... it has no honor.
There is a special place in Heaven for Irena Sendler, William Perl, Schindler, Jan Karski, Stefan Korbonski, and others who saved Jewish lives while working in the Hell of Nazism.
These are the people who belong in history books and deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, not Comrade Obama, Yassir Arafat, Henry Kissinger or Le Duc Tho.
After reading this dear woman’s story, I realize how calloused I am to the suffering going on in the world, and how I am shamed into silence about my “problems” when I see what she faced and overcame.
Her character truly is modeled after her Lord Jesus. May we all be as obedient and loving as she was in her service to her Lord.
I'd throw Corrie Ten Boom in there as well.
And she lost the Noble Peace prize to Algore and his inane poser point!
The reason I will Hate Algose till the day I die!
Wow! What a story!! I guess the NPP is pay to play.
poser = power
Though it does fit :-)
“Sendler told the authorities that she would once again shelter Jews from the authorities.”
That is a right chick right there!
Don’t forget Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved so many and died in a Soviet prison for his efforts.
As I recall, Le Duc Tho refused the NPP.
“Righteous Among the Nations”
She exemplified the title.
Such a beautiful face in her old age. It is said we get the faces we deserve in the end - she did.
