Skip to comments.ACLU to Holder: Zimmerman case is over

In a letter from the ACLU to Attorney General Eric Holder:
Even though the Supreme Court permits a federal prosecution following a state prosecution, the ACLU believes the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Constitution protects someone from being prosecuted in another court for charges arising from the same transaction. A jury found Zimmerman not guilty, and that should be the end of the criminal case.

*snort* As if...
Blind hog; meet acorn...
For once, I agree with the ACLU.
I believe Holder has no intention of pursuing federal charges. But he wants to say he’s considering, to appease the people who want it. By the time it becomes clear there will be no charges, people won’t be so worked up about it.
I love it when they eat their own.
This is twice for me; they also condemned unsupervised NSA data collection.
When in my mind the ACLU becomes the lesser of two evils, it must be pretty bad.
I missed that.
LMAO!! Since when did the ACLU decide that Obama and Holder pay attention to the constitution? LOL! The constitution? BWA HA HA HA!
"Eric, you believe these guys? The constitution? BWA HA HA HA!
In an unusual move, the Justice Department announced Wednesday that it is collecting feedback from Americans for its investigation into whether to file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.
Justice officials said the move comes because of interest in this matter. People can e-mail Sanford.Florida@usdoj.gov if they have thoughts on how the department should proceed.
Agreed. This was and is theater to chase the slaves back onto the plantation.
I don’t think it worked as well as hoped because there have actually been a fair number of blacks speaking out in the other direction.
This is exactly what they want....they don’t want the case back into court, they gain points by just milking the verdict.
If Holder and his Handlers haven’t figured this out by now, they are a lot dumber than they look.
Not that the media would give them a voice, nor any politicians from either the Democratic Party nor the GOP.
What MOM may argue (concepts stolen from another Freeper, can’t recall who): Normally double jeopardy does not prevent federal prosecution after state prosecution because the federal and state governments are separate sovereigns. However, in this case, Florida acted at the behest of the President and DoJ, so the first case counts as both a federal and a state prosecution for double jeopardy purposes. The federal government therefore does get another try. (I think the Freeper cited a case, too.)
When the ACLU tells liberals to stop you know they have really gone over the edge.
According to a recent poll, only 21% of people want to see a civil rights trial of Zimmerman. 58% oppose it, with the rest having no opinion. Politically, a civil rights trial of Zimmerman is a non-starter, though would be popular with the MSNBC crowd.
Obama and Holder are arrogant, childish, and spiteful. They are investigating to keep Zimmerman under a constant intimidation of the federal government. Just like their little spite move telling the AG of Florida to put a hold on Zimmerman’s gun used to shoot Martin. That was just a big
“You’re not gonna do what you want” move. Until this case is closed by the Feds Zimmerman will be investigated, snooped on, phones tapped, history scoured for so-called racial bias, a snitch line will remain open, etc.
The point is to show Zimmerman who is boss regardless the verdict.
That is how racist and petty Obama and his bitch boy Holder really are.
My world is coming undone. The ACLU agrees with me three times in the last three weeks and Jimmuh Carter agreed with me twice in one week.
I can only take so much!
Rights in criminal cases
No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime,
unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury,
except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia,
when in actual service in time of War or public danger;
nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb,
nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself,
nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law;
nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
I am unable to comprehend your post. Somebody help.
...did you mean does NOT get another try?
Interesting - that correlates with the percentage of our population who identify as hard core leftists or minority ideologues (or both).
Is the last name name not spelled Cahttuh ??
Oooooppps! I meant the Feds do NOT get another try!!!
I really can’t fake a southern accent when writing as well as Hillary Clintoon can fake a black accent when pandering to adoring crowds of the same.
Got to work on it.
ACLU believes the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Constitution protects someone from being prosecuted in another court for charges arising from the same transaction. A jury found Zimmerman not guilty, and that should be the end of the criminal case.
They got that right!
However, in the next paragraph, they state:
Although the George Zimmerman case did not involve a law enforcement officer, many other shootings of unarmed Black men around the country have.
and then they proceed to list a few examples, including Oscar Grant.
So, ACLU, does the Double Jeopardy Clause contain an exception for crimes committed by cops on duty?
It probably would have made more sense if I included “NOT” in the last sentence, as in the Feds do NOT get another try...
Whew. You almost caused me to give up drinking.
Actually Holder and Obama don’t care if Zimmerman
is prosecuted again, they know that what ever reason
is given, their voters will know it’s because of
Holder has no intention of bringing a civil rights case. The administration is just trying to fan the flames as a distraction.
Watch what the other hand is doing.
Excellent point. Holder will tap-dance the Zimmerman issue just long enough for the corrupt media to redirect the attention of low-information citizens to another government-manufactured soap opera.
“Is the last name name not spelled Cahttuh ??”
Correct spelling is “Catarrh*”
*ca·tarrh [kuh-tahr] Show IPA
Pathology . inflammation of a mucous membrane, especially of the respiratory tract, accompanied by excessive secretions.
Only one "T" in Cahtuh, though.
(alternately; Cahta, Cahtah)
For once, I agree with the ACLU.
don’t you mean twice, they are protesting nsa spying also.
I hear ya.
And that lets you know that this administration has officially bolted over the far left line.
I will never donate a single dollar to the ACLU again.
LOL! Well said.

Ding! Ding!! Ding!!! Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!!
As others have pointed out, this momentum will be utilized in the next assault on the 2nd Amendment. Gun Owners of America thinks that the recent agreement in the Senate negotiated by John McCain to limit filibusters on presidential appointments will be enacted by Harry Reid when the Demo>c<rats counterattack for more gun control.
It’s shameful when you think of it, the ACLU quoting a document they’ve lifted their leg and whizzed on for decades on end.
I'm with you on that... Alternate universe? Quick, what color is the sky over your house?
There is no color to the sky...only shades of gray. (Thank you, Monkees!)
I knew that something tasting horrible tends to drain from my sinuses whenever I talk about Catarrh, should have remembered the spelling...
“I dont think it worked as well as hoped because there have actually been a fair number of blacks speaking out in the other direction.”
Have you seen this? It’s good.
