Chicago - CPS to lay off 2,113 teachers, staff; CTU calls it ‘a bloodbath’

Chicago Public Schools officials announced late Thursday that 2,113 teachers and other employees would be laid off Friday, largely due to a giant pension obligation increase that’s straining the system.

“In fiscal year ‘14 we’re facing a historic deficit of $1 billion that is driven primarily by a $400 million increase in our annual teacher pension payments,” said CPS spokesman Becky Carroll. “Absent pension reform in Springfield, we have very few options available to us to close that gap, and that has resulted in bringing this crisis to the doorsteps of our schools.” Of those being laid off, 1,077 are support staff and 1,036 are teachers. The laid off teachers represent about 4 percent of last year’s total faculty of 23,290....

so while the headline claims 2113 teachers are to be cut, when you see the details, only just under half of this number is actually teachers.

But they like to appear to make the number bigger than what it really is.

Ya gotta love the public employee unions. They bring such enlightenment to the world.

I suppose this approach is better than what they did in Detroit.

I’m going to send this to every whiny libtard teacher I know. And I’m going to ask them to send a note to our Governor, Scott Walker, (R, WI) kissing his @ss for working so hard on our budget that included FREEING THEM from the Unionistas and allowing them to keep their jobs.

We have not had ONE teacher laid off in Wisconsin. (Of course, some have quit ahead of schedule so they can still suckle at the Taxpayer Teat and get their full Golden Parachutes filled with taxpayer-funded benefits!) *Rolleyes*

But at least that’s over - for a while, anyway! :)

“There’s just absolutely no interest on the part of the mayor of this city to appropriately fund schools or work with us to get funding from Springfield.”

Lewis suggested the lack of pension progress may be an attempt “to sabotage the school system so they can hand it over to their privatizing friends.”

That amazes me. Rham wants to privatize the schools in Chicago? Or is this liberal just making chit up? (As usual.)

I’m hearing this comment more and more from the libs in my life. They seriously think that 0bama has taken the Nation to the RIGHT! OMG!

Carroll said the majority of teachers to be laid off Friday are not tenured teachers, meaning they have been in classrooms for less than three years.

It would have been a great opportunity to eliminate deadwood, but last hired, first fired. ...And the Teachers Union continues with the primary goal of improving education. /s

Follow the money in government waste. Including textbooks, resources, data systems, etc. It is mind boggling.

I had a consultant tell me she was walking the halls of a high school and stopped by the door of one classroom only to hear the teacher lecturing on World War Eleven (II). At first she thought she was trying to trick the students with the Roman numeral but she never missed a beat and continued her lecture and writing World War II on the board and calling it World War Eleven.

It is very frustrating for those teachers who are professional, dedicated, and have to associate with those just using up oxygen in the building not to mention adversely affecting students for life.

And you can bet that the teachers who were laid off were those with less seniority, and therefore less likely to enjoy those outrageous pension benefits.

They are in denial and don’t or can’t admit that their long held socialist/communist views just don’t work.

Bigger numbers brings more sympathy and outrage. Just following in their community organizer’s footsteps of fudging the numbers.

Our schoold district could cut 90% of the support staff and they wouldn’t be missed.

This (and the Detroit bk) could be fixed so easily with the creation of some additional Baraqqi/Bernanke/Lew minibucks.

Why isn’t that happening?

I was told that a test was given in DC to high school teachers and they scored WORSE that 8th grade students!!!

And, the students in DC are among the least educated in the country. Sigh.
