Chicago Public Schools officials announced late Thursday that 2,113 teachers and other employees would be laid off Friday, largely due to a giant pension obligation increase thats straining the system.
In fiscal year 14 were facing a historic deficit of $1 billion that is driven primarily by a $400 million increase in our annual teacher pension payments, said CPS spokesman Becky Carroll. Absent pension reform in Springfield, we have very few options available to us to close that gap, and that has resulted in bringing this crisis to the doorsteps of our schools. Of those being laid off, 1,077 are support staff and 1,036 are teachers. The laid off teachers represent about 4 percent of last years total faculty of 23,290....
Who would have thought: absent perpetual growth of contributors, defined benefit pensions are unsustainable. Anyone with a modicum of common sense and the ability to do grade school math - that’s who!
Not anymore...
If there’s one thing Chicago politicians know, it’s that the citizens of the city will put up with any amount of corruption as long services work. The growing success of charter schools in Chicago is making it clearer every day that CPS is a service that doesn’t work.
Whether they are the party of personal responsibility or not, everyone has to pay the piper and face the consequences of our actions.
Deal with it teachers. Sorry. We warned you though.
Public Union Layoffs == “Bloodbath”
Dozens of Kids & Citizens Murdered with Regularity == {{yawn}}
Doesn’t the Chicago Teachers Union force one to belong to the Communist Party to be a teacher? Oh, righhhhht. Most of them do it voluntarily.
Gee, who’d a thunk it!?
Well, they voted for Rahm, and so now they get to deal with it.
Sad and frustrating. But not surprising. I am amazed at how ignorant High School graduates are.
Even if the CTU doesn't have the brainpower to see it, the administrators can no longer ignore reality. It finally dawned on them that there has already been a huge "bloodbath!" of the working taxpayer.
Why is that never mentioned?
There seems to be a glimmer of hope here. Even the most obtuse liberal is beginning to see that without eliminating "public (self-service) Unions," neither Chicago, nor any other public entity can survive.
Period.
What will it take, fercryinoutloud?
Most liberals, and an amazing percentage of "conservatives" have not the slightest clue that "education" has become a gigantic percentage of welfare by another name.
No worse example can be imagined than an unprepared, ignorant, uneducated retard is pretending to educate children, and getting away with it for years, perhaps decades.
And getting unconscionable wages and bennies in the bargain.
